Kylie fever has officially hit Melbourne. As Australia’s pop princess prepares to take over the MCG, we revisit eight unforgettable moments from her four-decade reign in the spotlight.

Australia’s pop princess, Kylie Minogue, will headline the pre-game entertainment at the 2026 AFL Grand Final on Saturday, September 26.

She will perform for what is tipped to be a capacity crowd of 100,000 fans at the MCG right before the biggest match on the Australian sporting calendar.

This performance represents the ultimate homecoming for the Melbourne-born superstar.

Four decades ago, a teenage Kylie was invited to a local Fitzroy Football Club fundraiser because of her breakout role as Charlene on Neighbours. Her cover of The Loco-Motion that night caught the industry’s attention, transforming the soap star into a certified pop sensation.

Now, with more than 80 million records sold worldwide and multiple Grammy and ARIA awards, she returns for her most iconic performance as this year’s AFL Grand Final headliner.

As she prepares for her Grand Final extravaganza, we look back at the milestones, reinventions and triumphs that define her legendary four decades in the spotlight.

Our favourite Kylie moments from the past 40 years

With more than 80 million records sold worldwide and a career built on staggering resilience, Kylie has evolved from a local soap star to a global phenomenon.

Here are eight unforgettable moments that shaped her legacy:

#1. The Fitzroy Football Club fundraiser (1986)

The moment that started it all.

At a Fitzroy Football Club benefit concert, an 18-year-old Kylie delivered a duet of I Got You Babe alongside actor John Waters, before belting out a spontaneous encore of Little Eva’s The Loco-Motion.

The grassroots performance caught the attention of producers, and led directly to her signing with the late Michael Gudinski’s Mushroom Records.

Released as her debut single, the track exploded – sitting at No.1 for seven weeks and becoming the highest-selling Australian single of the 1980s.

#2. The Neighbours wedding (1987)

Capturing the hearts of the nation, her portrayal of tomboy mechanic Charlene Mitchell culminated in a legendary television wedding to Jason Donovan’s Scott Robinson in TV soap Neighbours.

The episode cemented her status as Australia’s ultimate girl-next-door and remains one of the most-watched moments in Australian television history.

#3. The Michael Hutchence era (late 1980s)

Kylie’s high-profile romance with late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence sparked a bold creative shift.

As highlighted in the recent INXS documentary on Netflix, the late rock star encouraged her to break away from her wholesome, girl-next-door image.

He influenced an edgier, daring artistic direction that laid the crucial groundwork for her fearless pop reinventions.

#4. The Can’t Get You Out of My Head fever (2001)

Releasing what would become one of the most successful singles of the 2000s redefined Kylie as a modern, sophisticated pop icon.

This global chart-topper sold more than 12 million units worldwide and dominated radio airwaves globally.

And, in August this year, it reached another milestone, officially joining the Spotify Billions Club after surpassing one billion streams on the popular music platform.

#5. The gold hotpants (2000)

It wouldn’t be a list of our favourite Kylie moments without mentioning the gold hotpants worn in the film clip for Spinning Around, which appeared on her seventh studio album, Light Years, released in 2000.

The music video spawned urban legends worthy of pop lore – from wild rumours about how much Kylie’s derriere was insured for to the suggestion her iconic hotpants were a 50p (about $1) bargain from a London flea market.

According to Arts Centre Melbourne, the hot pants were found at the flea market by photographer Katerina Jebb before Kylie wore them in a photoshoot for her website and then to a fancy-dress party. Kylie then unearthed them again in a frantic wardrobe raid the night before the Spinning Around video was filmed.

Even the Queen of Pop, Madonna, admitted she was “actually a little bit jealous” of Kylie, admitting on a recent BBC special with Graham Norton that “I think my ex-husband at the time [Guy Ritchie] had a crush on her, and I was like, ‘I’ll never be as beautiful as Kylie!’”.

#6. Overcoming breast cancer (2005–2006)

Following a highly publicised breast cancer diagnosis, Kylie paused her massive Showgirl tour to focus entirely on her health and treatment.

Her victorious return to the stage a year later became a profound display of strength and physical endurance, deeply inspiring fans and cancer survivors worldwide.

#7. Making chart history (2020)

To say she is a pop icon almost feels like an understatement.

Kylie made UK chart history by becoming the first female artist to achieve a number-one album across five consecutive decades.

Throw in a glittering collection of Grammy and Brit awards, plus induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, and her track record is undeniable.

Whether she’s serving 80s bubblegum, noughties disco or a viral modern anthem, she constantly reinvents herself for a new generation, ensuring that no matter the decade, we just can’t get her out of our head.

#8. The 2026 AFL Grand Final

A crowd packed with die-hard AFL fans isn’t exactly the first place you’d expect to find Australia’s reigning pop darling. Yet, before she even steps onto the field, it’s already a given that she will be the real star of the show (footy fans, don’t @me).

Such is the sheer pervasiveness of Kylie.

The bonafide music icon is just as at home belting out hits for 100,000 fans at a footy game as she is sparkling under the glimmering lights of a sold-out global tour – and that universal appeal is exactly what makes her a legend.
