Wangi Wangi in Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, has a few claims to fame.
Not only is it the hometown of renowned Australian artist Sir William Dobell, its traditional place name, wontee wontee, is believed to mean “place of many owls” in Awabakal.
Now, this local history has been brought to life as part of a giant owl sculpture out the front of Wangi Wangi Public School, which will be part of the region’s new public art ‘Owl Trail.’
ABC Newcastle reporter Laurise Dickson dropped in to chat to some of the students who created it.
