Hollywood director Michael Mann has been treated in hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a gun range in Los Angeles.
The 83-year-old filmmaker, best known for directing Heat and Collateral, sustained what his representative described as a “superficial injury” when a gun accidentally discharged while holstered on Saturday.
In a statement to the Associated Press (AP) on Sunday, his representative said: “On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released.”
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to reports of shots fired at a gun range in West Los Angeles at around 4pm local time on Saturday.
Police said the shooting was accidental and that Mann had been taken to hospital in a stable condition.
According to ABC News, the director was holstering a handgun when it discharged, striking him in the left thigh.
Mann, who has been an experienced target shooter for decades, is currently preparing to direct Heat 2, the follow-up to his acclaimed 1995 crime thriller starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
The new film, based on Mann’s 2022 novel of the same name, will serve as both a prequel and sequel to the original.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Adolescence star Stephen Graham are set to appear in the film, with production expected to begin in January 2027.
Deadline reports that, according to a source close to the filmmaker, the accident is not expected to affect the production schedule.
Mann’s other directing credits include The Last of the Mohicans, Manhunter, The Insider and Miami Vice.
His most recent film was the 2023 biographical drama Ferrari, starring Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz.
