Nicole Kidman seemed to hint at her split from husband Keith Urban in a recent Vogue profile — weeks before the world knew their 19-year marriage was over.
The Oscar winner, 58, who separated from the country singer, 57, earlier this summer, sat down for her cover story in late August.
At the time, the couple’s breakup hadn’t yet been made public, but even the interviewer sensed something had changed.
Journalist Wendell Steavenson, who conducted the conversation, wrote that he ‘guessed as much’ that Kidman and Urban were no longer together, noting the mood of the discussion — though he ‘didn’t want to pry.’
‘When I asked about how she felt now, in her 50s, I had expected to hear a nice trite response about the sagacity of age,’ Steavenson observed in the piece published on Wednesday. ‘Instead Kidman was wry, rueful, unsure of herself.’
Kidman then offered a comment that, in hindsight, seemed to speak volumes: ‘How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?’ she said.

Although she avoided directly addressing her relationship status, Kidman did reflect on her summer spent surrounded by loved ones while filming Practical Magic 2 in London.
‘Going to Hyde Park and concerts, Glastonbury and Salisbury — so much summer fun — Evita, seeing theater, walking Hampstead Heath, swimming there,’ she told Vogue.
“Went to Portugal, went to Greece, had my nieces and nephews around, lots of family: my sister, my best friend since I was 4, and her three children. A very tight group.”
Just weeks later, on September 29, news broke that Kidman and Urban had quietly separated earlier in the summer.
The actress filed for divorce in Nashville the following day, citing irreconcilable differences and listing the date of separation as the time of filing.
The pair, who married in 2006, share two daughters — Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
According to the filing, Kidman requested to be designated as the primary residential parent.
Interestingly, Keith abruptly ended an interview earlier this year when asked about the sex scenes Nicole had filmed for her hit movie Babygirl.

The singer had called into the Mix102.3 Adelaide radio show Hayley & Max in the Morning in Australia to promote a series of upcoming shows.
Back in September 2024, he reportedly became ‘guarded” whenever his wife’s name came up during a sit-down with The Times.
‘I just don’t want to give you guys a headline about my wife,’ the Grammy winner told a reporter while discussing Nicole’s role in his past addiction intervention.
Meanwhile, Nicole often spoke warmly of Keith in interviews.
In 2009, she told Access Hollywood she wanted to grow ‘old’ with him, and in 2017, she told Ellen DeGeneres she ‘had such a crush on Keith’ when they first met.
Now, sources told the Daily Mail that Keith has reportedly moved on with an unnamed female musician.
Rumors have linked him to 25-year-old country star Maggie Baugh, though other insiders point to singer Kelsea Ballerini, 32.
Meanwhile, Nicole and Keith was last publicly seen together in June this year at a FIFA World Cup match in Nashville, Tennessee.

The actress was reportedly left ‘blindsided’ by the split.
One Daily Mail source explained, ‘Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour.
‘There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce, but there is a world that they both live where neither of them are in it.”
‘Keith and Nicole have been together for decades and there is a world which they can reconcile, but the way their pairing is now, it is not a couple,’ the insider added.
A separate source told People that the mother-of-two is ‘hurt’ and did not want their 19-year marriage to end.
‘Nicole’s hurt and feels betrayed. It’s devastating to her. She’s shocked,’ the source said, adding she ‘didn’t want this and has been fighting to save the marriage.’
According to divorce documents obtained by the Daily Mail, Nicole will become the primary residential parent of their two teenage daughters.
On Tuesday, Nicole shared her first Instagram message since splitting from Keith.
The star said she was ‘excited’ to be at the Chanel show in Paris with her daughters.
Sunday, the elder of Kidman’s two children with the musician, was back at work just 24 hours later as French couture brand Christian Dior unveiled its latest collection at Paris Fashion Week.
The model walked the catwalk last week, before using her social media platform to praise the spring-summer presentation by sharing video footage of her appearance.
Captioning the post with a series of credits to the creative team behind her latest show, she wrote: ‘j’adore dior.’
