Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and OpenAI have partnered to introduce Agentic Payments, a new way for users to make digital transactions directly through conversational platforms like ChatGPT.
The initiative is currently in a pilot phase and aims to let users discover, shop and pay for products within a single chat interface.
The collaboration combines Razorpay’s payment infrastructure, NPCI’s UPI network which handles around 20 billion transactions every month, and OpenAI’s conversational tools to enable seamless in chat payments. Users can complete purchases without moving between apps or websites.
Agentic Payments will operate through Razorpay’s banking partners Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, and use new UPI features such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay for secure and instant transactions. The first pilot integration is with BigBasket, allowing users to place grocery orders through ChatGPT.
For example, a user can ask to order ingredients for a recipe, view options from BigBasket, confirm the selection and complete payment through UPI. Users will also be able to track and manage transactions in real time.
The three organizations plan to explore additional use cases such as personalized checkout and user initiated automated payments.
