More than 20 years after his final movie as James Bond, Pierce Brosnan may have a new franchise on his hands. A sequel to his upcoming Cliffhanger reboot is reportedly in early development.

According to Deadline, Rocket Science and Thank You Pictures, who are producers on the Cliffhanger reboot, have begun development on a sequel, although it’s unclear at this stage whether any of the cast or creatives will be back. Jaume Collet-Serra directed the reimagining of the 1993 classic starring Sylvester Stallone, which boasts a screenplay written by Melanie Toast, based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour. Collet-Serra is best known for his collaborations with Liam Neeson (Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter) and Dwayne Johnson (Jungle Cruise and Black Adam) as well as for directing the Netflix hit Carry-On starring Taron Egerton.

The original Cliffhanger followed Stallone’s mountain climber Gabe as he became embroiled in a heist of a U.S. Treasury plane flying through the Rocky Mountains. The action movie received positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, earning $255 million worldwide. Cliffhanger is also the Guinness World Record holder for the most expensive film stunt in the air, which was performed by stuntman Simon Crane.

Cliffhanger Reboot Began Life as a Legacy Sequel

The upcoming Cliffhanger reboot initially entered development as a legacy sequel to the 1993 movie, with Stallone set to reprise his role, with Greenland helmer Ric Roman Waugh in the director’s chair. However, in October 2024, it was revealed that the project had undergone a massive creative overhaul, with Stallone and Waugh departing and Brosnan and Collet-Serra coming aboard. Lily James also joined the reboot at that time in a co-leading role.

In the new Cliffhanger, Brosnan will play seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, who operates a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with his daughter Sydney. During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. Ray’s daughter Naomi (James), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival. Nell Tiger Free (The First Omen), Franz Rogowski (Passages), Shubham Saraf (Shantaram), Assaad Bouab (Franklin), Suzy Bemba (Poor Things), and Bruno Gouery (Emily in Paris) round out the ensemble cast in supporting roles.

The Cliffhanger reboot is expected to receive a theatrical release, including an IMAX element, although a distributor has not yet boarded the project. Rocket Science is handling international sales, with CAA Media Finance representing North American and Chinese territories. Last year, Collet-Serra shared that the reboot was being made for audiences to see in theaters, stating, “We’re going to bring the audience a truly thrilling and visceral, premium theatrical experience. Lily in particular has gone above and beyond for the role, putting in real training and learning to climb. Her dedication has allowed us to capture some incredible shots we couldn’t have achieved otherwise, and the whole crew is blown away by her commitment.”

Until Cliffhanger secures a theatrical release, Brosnan fans can head to Netflix to check out his latest movie, The Thursday Murder Club.
