Hilitany, a £300,000 purchase, offered encouragement when runner-up on debut at Ffos Las in July and he built on that to run out a ready winner over this course and distance a few weeks later. Hilitany quickened clear under just a hands-and-heels ride to beat subsequent winner Art Lover by three and three-quarter lengths, looking a smart prospect in the making.
Just Adair made no impact in maiden/novice company but showed much-improved form to get off the mark on his handicap debut over this course and distance a couple of weeks ago, keeping on well to lead close home and win by half a length. Just Adair is out of a half-sister to Golden Horn, so his pedigree offers hope that he can carry on progressing having started out in handicaps from a lowly mark, and he is taken to defy a 2lb rise in the weights.
Respiro Solitario won back-to-back handicaps at Wolverhampton and Ffos Las and he has remained in good form since, running at least as well in defeat when third at Chester and runner-up at Newbury. His last couple of efforts were in a higher grade of race than the one he contests here, so he looks likely to give another good account.
Livonian, a €130,000 purchase as a yearling, comes from a good family and showed plenty to work with when runner-up at Southwell on debut. Livonian failed by a nose but was a length and three-quarters clear of the third who went on to win next time. That form is the best on offer and Livonian is open to improvement, so he stands out as the one to beat. The well-bred Return To Unit cost 900,000 guineas and is in top hands with Roger Varian, so he could provide the main threat.

Desperate Dan progressed well towards the end of last season when encountering testing ground, winning a Nottingham handicap before only narrowly missing out over this course and distance. He’s not made an impact on either start this season, but he wasn’t beaten far at Sandown last time and looks capable of taking another step forward now returning to an easier surface. He’s been eased 2 lb since his latest effort so is now off the same mark as when only narrowly denied here.
Karthala was too green to do himself justice in a mile novice here on debut in May and also struggled to make an impact when dropped in trip at Kempton on his next start. However, he fared better back over a mile here last time, running on inside the final furlong to finish third. An opening BHA mark of 68 isn’t obviously lenient based on the bare form, but he’s a half-brother to some useful sorts and looks likely to improve now stepping into handicaps.
Dashing Dick was disappointing at Newmarket last time but he’d been in good form beforehand and is worth a chance to bounce back here. He was beaten only a head at Yarmouth in May and then shaped well again when beaten less than a length and a half in third at Newmarket. Coul Angel ran his best race yet when runner-up over this course and distance last time so is another entitled to plenty of respect.Â
The application of blinkers helped Law of Design return to form and finish fourth at Doncaster on his penultimate start, and he produced an even better effort in the headgear when third at Ascot on Friday. Law of Design looked likely to win when going clear approaching the final furlong but he was picked off close home by a pair ridden more patiently. The way he went through that seven-furlong handicap suggests the return to six furlongs could work in his favour, and he is worth siding with.
