Some Social Security recipients may see smaller benefits as the agency continues to make up for overpayments.

WASHINGTON — Some Social Security recipients are set to receive September’s payments this week, but certain people may see smaller checks this month.

The smaller benefit checks come after the Social Security Administration announced it would start withholding 50% of a recipient’s monthly check to make up for any overpayment issued previously. The administration began withholding the benefits in July after sending out notices to recipients in late April.

The agency will withhold benefits until the overpayment is repaid.

Previously, the Biden administration capped the clawback rate at 10% for one year after reports that some had been forced into financial hardship due to the prior 100% clawback rate.

Social Security payments are typically paid out on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on a recipient’s birth date. The agency publishes its calendar annually, showing when payments are set to arrive each month.

Why you won’t see a Supplemental Security Income payment in September

Supplemental Security Income is a federal program eligible for those who are 65 and older, blind or disabled and have limited financial resources. These payments are usually made on the first of the month, but weekends and holidays influence the benefit dates.

Whenever the first of the month falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, SSI payments are made on the preceding business day.

Those who receive SSI benefits will not get payments in September, as it was paid out before Labor Day. Labor Day was on Sept. 1 this year, pushing the payment date to Aug. 29.Â
