Met Eireann has issued a number of rain warnings across the weekend, with one county facing a significant flooding risk
The rain has already arrived in some areas
That period of “boring”, settled and dry weather is set to give way this weekend, as a number of rain warnings are set to come into effect for counties in the south of Ireland.
Heavy downpours are expected through a washout night, particularly in Munster, and there is the chance of thundery bursts in the areas affected by the various weather warnings.
Don’t be fooled by the relatively calm start to the day as conditions will take a turn for the worse as the day progresses this Saturday, October 18.
Met Eireann has issued 12-hour Status Yellow rain warnings for the counties of Cork and Kerry from 5pm on Saturday. The national forecaster has warned of spells of heavy rain and the chance of thundery downpours.

From 9pm, however, Cork’s rain warning will be upgraded to Status Orange as the county will be battered by heavy rain and treacherous travelling conditions are anticipated.
From 8pm on Saturday night to 8am on Sunday morning, Waterford and Wexford will fall under a Status Yellow rain warning and face the risk of localised flooding, as well as difficult travelling conditions.

Delivering the weekend forecast, a Met Eireann forecaster said: “Today will be a dull and breezy day with scattered outbreaks of rain in the west and southwest at first, gradually spreading northeastwards across the country through the day. The rain will be heaviest and most persistent in Munster. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in fresh and gusty southeast winds, stronger near coasts.
“Wet and blustery with heavy and persistent rain becoming widespread early in the night. Thundery bursts are possible with spot flooding likely. Rain will clear from the west and southwest by morning. Temperatures not falling below 10 to 13 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds, moderating and veering southwest in Munster and Connacht by morning.”
Of Sunday, they added: “Heavy and persistent rain in the north and east at first, with further thundery falls and spot flooding possible. The rain will clear northeastwards through the morning with sunshine and showers following from the southwest, some of which will be heavy. Fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds at first but winds will ease moderate southwesterly behind the rain. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees.”
