I like pitting devices against each other, and one big matchup in particular I’m excited to see involves an iPhone 17 Pro Max vs Pixel 10 Pro XL face-off to determine which one is the best phone. But before that can be determined, I want to see how their cameras perform when it comes to macro photography. Although both are best camera phone contenders, only one can come out on top here.

That’s why I took the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the Pixel 10 ProXL with me to a day trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where I wanted to see exactly how they would perform when it comes to getting really close to subjects. I’ve already proven how Pro Res Zoom on the Pixel 10 Pro XL makes it the zoom camera to beat, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s new Center Stage camera makes it more suitable for selfies.

This time, I’m going to show how each device captures macro photos by looking at their color science, details capture, and dynamic range performance. Here’s what I found.
