Picture: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The women\u2019s marathon world record-holder Ruth Chepngetich has been banned for three years after admitting to an anti-doping violation, but her record time will be allowed to stand because it pre-dated her positive test.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Kenya\u2019s Chepngetich smashed the world record at the Chicago Marathon in October 2024, clocking 2:09:56 to become the first woman in history to break the 2:10:00 barrier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">She was provisionally suspended in July after testing positive for the banned substance Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), which was found in a sample on 14 March 2025, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In a statement confirming a three-year ban, the AIU said Chepngetich\u2019s sample revealed an HCTZ concentration of 3,800ng\/mL, significantly above the World Anti-Doping Agency&#8217;s minimum reporting limit of 20ng\/mL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The AIU said Chepngetich initially could not explain her positive test despite its investigation, which included analysis of her medications, supplements and phone data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">But the AIU said Chepngetich then changed her explanation on 31 July, two weeks after her provisional suspension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Chepngetich said she recalled having \u201ctaken her housemaid\u2019s medication as treatment\u201d after falling ill, before realising that the medication contained HCTZ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The AIU said HCTZ is used clinically to treat fluid retention and hypertension.
