Having decorated their first home several times over, Jazmin Ali and Jamie Flinton felt they had outgrown the two-bedroom Edwardian semi in North Yorkshire and were ready for a new project. So, a three-bedroom<\/a> detached house, just 10 minutes away and still owned by the couple who built it in 1976, seemed the perfect next move, offering them all the garden and extra living space they craved. <\/p>\n

\u2018Even though the classic decor wasn\u2019t to my taste, it seemed as though it would be a very easy house to redecorate because I love style,\u2019 says Jazmin, who works part-time in a bakery and for North Home, an independent Nordic homeware shop in Leeds.<\/p>\n

Having studied visual communication at Leeds Arts University, Jazmin has a keen eye for design and is inspired by the Bauhaus movement and the designs of Charles Eames, Hans Wegner, Josef Albers, Finn Juhl and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. \u2018My style has evolved from mid-century modern<\/a> with a Nordic flair towards something more cosy and artsy, so I wanted to decorate in tones of green, orange, brown and pink,\u2019 she explains.<\/p>\n

The granite worktop and custom-made light oak units were in good condition, so Jazmin and Jamie just repainted the doors in Light Bronze Green by Little Greene and added new handles and wooden knobs from Magnet. The linen blind is from H&M Home Katie Lee<\/p>\n

\u2018We haven\u2019t had to make any structural changes here, which we were very pleased about because our first home had been a building site for a long time.\u2019 After getting the keys in August 2023, the couple threw themselves into repainting the kitchen<\/a>. \u2018Our last kitchen was tiny, and I kept it mostly white, but this one is a lot bigger, so I knew my dream for a dark and moody look would work,\u2019 says Jazmin.<\/p>\n

Alcove shelving provides another spot for Jazmin to curate displays. Dining chairs, Daals. Poster, Ferm Living Katie Lee<\/p>\n

To enhance the sense of space, two sets of wall cabinets were taken down and replaced with MDF shelves painted to blend into the walls. \u2018I\u2019m quite short and couldn\u2019t really reach into them anyway,\u2019 she adds. \u2018It has really opened up the room and given me space to display all my nice ceramics.\u2019<\/p>\n

In the couple\u2019s last home, this reproduction Eames lounge chair was tucked away upstairs in the office but now it is taking centre stage Katie Lee<\/p>\n

A big fan of art and photography, Jazmin often moves prints around the house. For instance, the large-scale artworks in the living room and guest bedroom, which inspired the decor in each space, have since been swapped around. \u2018The HK Living portrait of a man dressed in orange Seventies clothes is so big and bold that I wanted to bring it downstairs where it would make a statement above the sofa and I could enjoy it more,\u2019 she says. \u2018Luckily, the abstract piece that was downstairs works equally well upstairs.\u2019<\/p>\n

When it comes to displaying art<\/a>, Jazmin advises working around a favourite item: \u2018I like unusual pieces that evoke emotion. Having lots of frames on the wall can look a bit flat and boring, whereas if you add plates and other objects, it gives an extra dimension.\u2019<\/p>\n

Jazmin chose the Tracey Emin poster from the 2012 Paralympics as she loved the message: \u2018You inspire me with your determination and I love you\u2019. The wall hanging is a rug from Jysk Katie Lee<\/p>\n

To create a sense of continuity, every space, except the main bedroom and cloakroom, has been painted in Masquerade Mid by Little Greene. \u2018It\u2019s a lovely salmon pink that feels warm but isn\u2019t too in your face,\u2019 says Jazmin. \u2018In our last house, I tried so many different colours but here I\u2019ve stayed neutral<\/a> on the walls and used statement pieces, such as cushions and soft furnishings, that can be easily changed.\u2019<\/p>\n

Wall tiles were removed in favour of panelling sheets from Wickes painted in Elderton and a Rivington Folley mural, both by Graham & Brown Katie Lee<\/p>\n

The couple have a penchant for dark woods<\/a> and the wall colour ties in particularly well with the walnut-effect laminate flooring and wall-hung Ikea modular cabinets dotted around the house.<\/p>\n

The next step will be transforming the staircase and light oak internal doors to match. \u2018Jamie used to work with vinyl wrap, so he\u2019s wrapped the double doors between the living and dining room, which look great,\u2019 notes Jazmin. \u2018The end goal is to have all of the doors in the house the same, but it\u2019s quite a fiddly job.\u2019<\/p>\n

The low panelling was designed to accommodate the large artwork above the bed Katie Lee<\/p>\n

Now the couple are expecting their first child, the third bedroom will be getting a makeover soon, and eventually they hope to update the small shower room. \u2018I\u2019d love to get a bath installed and transform the space with some dark green tiles,\u2019 says Jazmin.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, there\u2019s scope to extend over the driveway at the side, although planning permission has lapsed: \u2018It\u2019s something we might consider in the future if we can afford it.\u2019<\/p>\n

Vintage chairs teamed with black B&Q wall lights are a simple option for the bedsides. Walls in Affogato by Little Greene Katie Lee<\/p>\n

Having honed their style over the years, the couple have no regrets about choosing a Seventies property as their forever home. \u2018In our last house, we went through so many different looks,\u2019 Jazmin concludes. \u2018I didn\u2019t really know what I liked or what worked, but now we\u2019re embracing the groovy!\u2019<\/p>\n
