{"id":104261,"date":"2025-10-26T01:33:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T01:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/104261\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T01:33:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T01:33:14","slug":"catherine-connolly-elected-10th-president-of-ireland-in-landslide-victory-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/104261\/","title":{"rendered":"Catherine Connolly elected 10th president of Ireland in landslide victory \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Independent TD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a> has been elected Ireland\u2019s 10th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">president<\/a> in a landslide victory, winning 63 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\">Fine Gael<\/a> candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\">Heather Humphreys<\/a> won less than half that figure, with 29 per cent of the first-preference vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\">Jim Gavin<\/a>, who ended his campaign in early October but whose name remained on the ballot paper, took 7 per cent of the vote, the party\u2019s worst-ever performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Turnout was higher than expected at 46 per cent, exceeding the 2018 presidential election, though this seems to have been driven in part by a campaign to encourage people to turn out and spoil their votes. <\/p>\n<p>Pat Leahy takes us through his top three points on the presidential election and the outcome of the vote. Photograph: Alan Betson<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Speaking after her election was formally declared at Dublin Castle last night, Ms Connolly said  she would be a president for all, including those who voted for her and those who didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">She said  she would \u201cspeak out when necessary\u201d, specifically mentioning Ireland\u2019s neutrality, and said  she would \u201craise my voice\u201d, citing her campaign promises to \u201cshape a new republic together\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy message is, use your voice in every way you can, because a republic and a democracy needs constructive questioning and together we can shape a new republic that values everybody, that values and champions diversity, and that takes confidence in our own identity, our Irish language, our English language and the new people who have come to our country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI will be an inclusive president for all of you and I regard it as an absolute honour the vote I have been given and I will represent you nationally and internationally to the best of my ability and as professionally and humanely as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760543005451-ca7fbadb-4050-4645-b529-1cd8dcf49dbf.jpeg\"\/>Catherine Connolly wins the presidency on a disastrous day for Fine Gael and Fianna F\u00e1il<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Connolly (68) is the third woman to be elected president after Mary Robinson in 1990 and Mary McAleese in 1997.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A clinical psychologist and barrister, the Galway politician entered politics in the late 1990s and was elected to Galway City Council for the Labour Party in 1999. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She served as mayor of Galway in 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/25\/the-winners-and-losers-of-the-presidential-election\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The winners and losers of the presidential electionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Connolly left Labour in 2006 after being blocked by the party in her bid to join Michael D Higgins, then a Galway TD and the man she is succeeding as president, as his running mate in a bid for a D\u00e1il seat in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She was elected to the D\u00e1il as an Independent TD in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2020 she became the first woman elected the D\u00e1il\u2019s leas cheann comhairle or deputy speaker, bringing her a higher profile in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The final result in Friday\u2019s presidential election never appeared to be in doubt from shortly  after the ballot boxes were opened. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Humphreys conceded early, telling reporters at the Cavan-Monaghan count centre: \u201cI want to congratulate Catherine on becoming the next president of Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd can I just say that Catherine will be a president for all of us, and she will be my president, and I really would like to wish her all the very, very best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Heather Humphreys speaks after the result was called on Saturday night. I stepped up to the plate, and that\u2019s what democracy is about. It\u2019s about people putting their name on the ballot paper, about people going forward. So I have absolutely not one regret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">T\u00e1naiste and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris said Ms Connolly would be\u201cpresident for all this country and for all of us\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI wish her every success. Her success will be Ireland\u2019s success,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin congratulated Ms Connolly on \u201ca very comprehensive election victory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He said Ms Connolly \u201cran a successful and impactful campaign\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe people have made their choice, and I have no doubt Catherine Connolly will serve the country well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In a sign of potential fallout in the party over its performance in the election, one Fianna F\u00e1il TD criticised the leadership, saying the campaign has inflicted damage on the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Erin McGreehan, who represents Louth, said thousands of the party members were disenfranchised by Mr Gavin ending his campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe morale is low and grassroots\u2019 support is very worrying,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">She also criticised the party leadership for stating in public that they would back Ms Humphreys, following Mr Gavin\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/25\/a-head-start-and-humanising-keepie-uppies-how-catherine-connolly-thrived-on-social-media\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">An early start and \u2018humanising\u2019 keepie-uppies: how Catherine Connolly thrived on social mediaOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Connolly scored a spectacular victory, winning in all constituencies, except Cavan-Monaghan, the home constituency of Ms Humphreys. The Independent TD won many constituencies by large margins. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Independent TD\u2019s 34-point winning margin is the largest in the history of the presidency, eclipsing the first count victory by her predecessor Michael D Higgins in 2018. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Supporters hailed the result as a game-changer for the left, which united behind her candidacy after she declared as an Independent in mid-July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">As the result unfolded during Saturday, leaders of left-wing parties said her victory was a repudiation of the current Fianna F\u00e1il-Fine Gael Coalition Government and a message that a left-led government, without either Fianna F\u00e1il and Fine Gael, was possible after the next general election.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald speaking to media at Dublin Castle on Saturday.
