Chinese policeman beats paralysis with spinal interface implant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In the 1987 American action film RoboCop, protagonist Alex Murphy is a police officer in a dystopian 21st-century Detroit when he is mortally wounded and rebuilt by cybernetic enhancements so that he can keep fighting crime.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Nearly 40 years on, a Chinese policeman and a team of doctors at Jilin University have turned what once seemed a highly futuristic treatment into an encouraging new reality.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, state broadcaster <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/cctv?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CCTV<\/a> reported that the Second Hospital of Jilin University earlier this year performed the world\u2019s first spinal interface surgery for quadriplegia \u2013 paralysis that affects all four limbs and the torso from the neck down.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Nine months after the surgery, the patient was able to stand and walk again with the aid of an exoskeleton robot.
