Jennifer Lawrence opened up about her hesitancy about speaking to the press during an interview with The New Yorker <\/a>published Monday.<\/p>\n

Lawrence, who has been been in the public spotlight since her teens, recalled a conversation with fellow-actor Viola Davis a few years prior. \u201cEvery time I do an interview, I think, \u2018I can\u2019t do this to myself again,\u2019\u201d\u00a0Lawrence recalled telling Davis at the time, adding, \u201cI feel like I lose so much control over my craft when I have to do press for a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oscar winner was 19 when she landed her breakthrough role in Debra Granik\u2019s film adaptation of Winter\u2019s Bone and would go on to feature in a series of successful films including her role as Katniss Everdeen in the blockbuster franchise, The Hunger Games, and David O. Russell\u2019s Silver Linings Playbook (for which she took home the Academy Award for Best Actress). She soon became just as known for her self-deprecating personality when speaking to the press, and when accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in 2013, Lawrence tripped while walking up the stairs toward the stage \u2014 a moment that seemed to cement her status as the forever relatable \u201ccool girl.\u201d Yet when she tripped while walking the red carpet at the ceremony a year later, many questioned if it was all an act, and the public\u2019s obsession over her candid demeanor began to sour.<\/p>\n

When looking back at this time in her life, Lawrence told The New Yorker, \u201cWell, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism,\u201d she said. \u201cI was young, I lived alone, I was being chased,\u201d she said, referring to the rapid paparazzi that would document her every move, noting that at the time she felt \u201cpissed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat person is annoying,\u201d said Lawrence when referring to old interviews. \u201cI get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying. Ariana Grande\u2019s impression of me on S.N.L. was spot-on.\u201d (In the bit, Grande does an impression of Lawrence during a Celebrity Family Feud sketch, and quips, \u201cI mean, I love Pringles. If no one\u2019s looking, I\u2019ll eat, like, a whole can.\u201d) Lawrence says the public turning on her made her life feel \u201cuninhabitable.\u201d She continued, \u201cI felt\u2014I didn\u2019t feel, I\u00a0was, I think\u2014rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawrence has addressed her two-year break from Hollywood in the past, telling Vanity Fair <\/a>in 2021: \u201cI just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I\u2019d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn\u2019t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, \u2018Why didn\u2019t she run?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She has since returned to the silver screen and co-stars in Lynne Ramsay\u2019s\u00a0Die My Love <\/a>alongside Robert Pattinson. The film, which is based on the 2012 novel by Ariana Harwicz of the same name and is produced by\u00a0Martin Scorsese<\/a>, debuts in theaters on Nov. 7.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of the more divisive films to play at Cannes this year, to say the least \u2014 but everything you\u2019ve heard about Lawrence\u2019s go-for-broke performance is indeed true,\u201d\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0critic David Fear wrote about\u00a0the upcoming film \u2014 one of the\u00a0most anticipated<\/a>\u00a0movies of the fall. \u201cUnhinged doesn\u2019t begin to cover it.\u201d<\/p>\n
