The Minister for Media is to request a full explanation from the chairman of the RT\u00c9 board, Terence O’Rourke, on a report into finances at the broadcaster.<\/p>\n
Patrick O’Donovan will outline his request at this morning’s Cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n
The pension payments, the disputed ownership of a piece of art in RT\u00c9\u2019s possession and the unclear status of a portion of land on the RT\u00c9 site came to light as part of a recent examination of RT\u00c9\u2019s 2024 accounts.<\/p>\n
Minister O’Donovan will tell Cabinet he wants a full written and oral report on the matters from Chairman of the RT\u00c9 board Terence O\u2019Rourke.<\/p>\n
In a note to staff yesterday, RT\u00c9 Director General Kevin Bakhurst said the payments referred to were historically recorded on RT\u00c9’s balance sheet and details were brought to the attention of the department.<\/p>\n
Regarding the art piece, he said RT\u00c9 is currently seeking to establish ownership of the piece, while the section of land referred to was originally used by the Department of Post and Telegraphs.<\/p>\n
The land is around one acre in size and is situated on the corner of the Stillorgan duel carriageway and Nutley Lane.<\/p>\n
Cabinet ministers will also consider the RT\u00c9 Annual Report for 2024 at their meeting.<\/p>\n
The report shows the broadcaster recorded a \u20ac5.5 million surplus last year compared to a \u20ac9.1m deficit the previous year.<\/p>\n
Exchequer funding was \u20ac48m and commercial revenues increased 4.9% to \u20ac158m.<\/p>\n
Approval in principle for BusConnects programme in Cork <\/p>\n
A number of other matters will also come before the Cabinet.<\/p>\n
Minister for Transport Darragh O\u2019Brien will seek approval in principle for the BusConnects programme in Cork.<\/p>\n
This will allow for the detailed design and procurement stage and for a planning application to be lodged with An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la.<\/p>\n
Minister O\u2019Brien, who is also Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, will also seek Government approval to support international climate initiatives at this year\u2019s COP30 conference in Brazil next month.<\/p>\n
Initiatives would have to be in line with the Government’s Climate Policy.<\/p>\n
As well as Minister O\u2019Brien, it is expected Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin will attend the conference, which is being organised by the United Nations.<\/p>\n
The conference will focus on the efforts needed to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5C, and the presentation of new national action plans.<\/p>\n
