{"id":112787,"date":"2025-10-30T19:54:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T19:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/112787\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T19:54:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T19:54:08","slug":"dublin-firefighter-terence-crosbie-sentenced-to-at-least-seven-years-for-rape-in-boston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/112787\/","title":{"rendered":"Dublin firefighter Terence Crosbie sentenced to at least seven years for rape in Boston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dublin firefighter Terence Crosbie has been sentenced to between seven and nine years in jail after being found guilty of raping a woman in a Boston hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The 38-year-old was visiting the US with Irish colleagues to participate in St Patrick\u2019s Day celebrations when the incident took place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The jury deliberated for three days before reaching a unanimous verdict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Crosbie has been in custody for 18 months and was accused of raping an American woman at the Omni Parker House hotel in downtown Boston after celebrating at the Black Rose bar on March 14, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Last June, his court hearing ended in a mistrial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Crosbie had flown to Boston from Ireland on the same day, March 15 last year, and he was scheduled to leave the following Tuesday, March 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Following the sentencing verdict on Thursday, Crosbie\u2019s attorneys told Court TV that their client\u2019s wife and family stand behind him and believe he is innocent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They also intend to appeal the verdict after today\u2019s sentencing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">At the sentencing hearing, the victim told the court it \u201chas been a struggle to heal\u201d and detailed the anxiety she has suffered since the rape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Crosbie also spoke, thanking the court for how his case was handled and asking the judge to consider that he is the sole provider for his wife and two children in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After a short break, the judge sentenced Crosbie to seven to nine years in prison with credit for the 593 days he had been incarcerated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Daniel Reilly who delivered closing arguments for the defense last week emphasised Crosbie\u2019s innocence and pointed to \u201creasonable doubt\u201d in the case, in the form of no video or audio of the alleged attack and the \u201clack of\u201d conclusive DNA evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Reilly said that his client\u2019s testimony declaring himself \u201cinnocent\u201d constitutes reasonable doubt and that the alleged victim\u2019s blood sample from the hospital Emergency Department she went to established that she was \u201cinebriated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Erin Murphy, who delivered closing arguments for the prosecution, asked the jury to convict Crosbie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms Murphy said the alleged victim had \u201cno reason to lie\u201d and gave a \u201cdetailed account of a stranger raping\u201d her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She pointed out that Crosbie exploited a colleague with whom he shared a room, Liam O\u2019Brien, as well as O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s \u201coblivion\u201d after drinking to take advantage of the victim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Doctors and nurses who interacted with the victim found her to be \u201cclinically sober\u201d with no evidence of intoxication.
