ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE – Nvidia\u2019s advanced Blackwell chip for artificial intelligence would not be available to \u201cother people\u201d, US President Donald Trump said on Nov 2.<\/p>\n
Nvidia, the world\u2019s most valuable company, dominates the market for AI chips.<\/p>\n
Questions have swirled about whether Mr Trump would allow shipments of a version of the Blackwell chip to China since August, when he suggested that <\/p>\n he might allow sales of a scaled-down version<\/p>\n <\/a> of Nvidia\u2019s next-generation advanced GPU chip in China.<\/p>\n However, his remarks to reporters aboard Air Force One suggest his administration may not be inclined to grant broad overseas access to the prized chip.<\/p>\n \u201cThe new Blackwell that just came out, it\u2019s 10 years ahead of every other chip,\u201d Mr Trump said as he flew to Washington after a weekend in Florida. \u201cBut no, we don\u2019t give that chip to other people,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The possibility that Blackwell chips might be sold to Chinese firms has drawn criticism from China hawks in Washington, who fear the technology would supercharge China\u2019s military capabilities and accelerate its artificial intelligence development. <\/p>\n Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, who chairs the House Select Committee on China, said such a move \u201cwould be akin (to) giving Iran weapons-grade uranium\u201d.<\/p>\n
