The causative pathogens often originate from the patient\u2019s endogenous flora. The specific organisms involved typically depend on the type and location of surgery; the most common are Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Enterococcus spp., and Escherichia coli [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 2\" title=\"Owens CD, Stoessel K. The primary sources of infection are the patient\u2019s skin and, less frequently, the gastrointestinal or genital tracts [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 3\" title=\"Cheadle WG. SSIs are a major global healthcare concern, affecting millions of patients annually and representing the second most common type of healthcare-associated infection [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 5\" title=\"Allegranzi B, Bischoff P, de Jonge S, Kubilay NZ, Zayed B, Gomes SM, et al. They impose a substantial economic burden due to extended hospital stays, readmissions, additional surgical procedures, and long-term antibiotic therapy, further exacerbated by indirect costs from lost productivity and disability [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 6\" title=\"Costabella F, Patel KB, Adepoju AV, Singh P, Attia Hussein Mahmoud H, Zafar A, et al. In low-resource settings, they are notably prevalent, affecting a significant proportion of surgical patients [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 8\" title=\"Ariyo P, Zayed B, Riese V, Anton B, Latif A, Kilpatrick C, et al. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), risk factors associated with SSIs include both non-modifiable factors s(e.g. age and gender) and modifiable factors (e.g., nutritional status, smoking, intraoperative techniques), the control of which can significantly improve patient outcomes [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 9\" title=\"Guidelines Review Committee. Global guidelines for the prevention of surgical site infection [Internet]. 2018.\" href=\"http:\/\/jhpn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s41043-025-01122-8#ref-CR9\" id=\"ref-link-section-d5915379e976\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">9<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Existing literature reveals significant knowledge gaps among healthcare professionals. According to a study conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Saudi Arabia, physician knowledge of surgical site infections (SSIs) was found to be insufficient. While (25.2%) of physicians were aware of SSI incidence rates, only (6.7%) possessed good overall knowledge, highlighting a substantial deficit in understanding key SSI indicators [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 9\" title=\"Guidelines Review Committee. Global guidelines for the prevention of surgical site infection [Internet]. 2018.\" href=\"http:\/\/jhpn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s41043-025-01122-8#ref-CR9\" id=\"ref-link-section-d5915379e982\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">9<\/a>]. A 2022 cross-sectional study in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, found that only (6.7%) of physicians had good knowledge of SSIs, while (63%) had fair knowledge and (30.2%) had poor knowledge [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 10\" title=\"Albishi W, Albeshri MA, Mortada HH, Alzahrani K, Alharbi R, Aljuhani F, et al. Awareness and level of knowledge about surgical site infections and risks of wound infection among medical physicians in King Abdulaziz university hospital: cross-sectional study. Similarly, a 2023 study in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, reported that merely (4.1%) of participants had good knowledge, with over half (55.7%) possessing only moderate understanding [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 11\" title=\" Maoudah AS, Alshareef L, Babukur RM, Alharthi A, Alnashri BY, Shanbari NA, et al. Cureus [Internet]. 2023 Dec 26;15(12):e51984. \" href=\"http:\/\/jhpn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s41043-025-01122-8#ref-CR11\" id=\"ref-link-section-d5915379e988\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">11<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A comprehensive review concluded that despite generally positive attitudes towards SSI prevention, healthcare professionals often have poor knowledge of SSI prevention [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 12\" title=\"Horgan S, Saab MM, Drennan J, Keane D, Hegarty J. Healthcare professionals\u2019 knowledge and attitudes of surgical site infection and surveillance: a narrative systematic review. This gap between knowledge and practice was highlighted in a study at a tertiary trauma center, which emphasized the need for more targeted training [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 13\" title=\"Nepravishta E, Topi S, To\u00e7i E, Nepravishta E, Kapaj A. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis highlight the variability in healthcare professionals\u2019 knowledge, revealing that (62%) of nurses demonstrated good knowledge of SSI prevention when assessed dichotomously, a figure which fell to (46%) on a three-point Likert scale [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 14\" title=\"Habtie TE, Feleke SF, Terefe AB, Alamaw AW, Abate MD. This inconsistency underscores a significant gap that can directly impact clinical practice. Fortunately, evidence from a 2023 interventional study confirms that structured educational programs can substantially improve HCPs\u2019 knowledge and skills in SSI detection and prevention [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 15\" title=\"Horgan S, Drennan J, Andrews E, Saab MM, Hegarty J. The findings will be essential for developing targeted interventions, such as policy revisions and educational initiatives\u2014including face-to-face sessions and poster campaigns, which have proven effective [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 16\" title=\"Owens P, McHugh S, Clarke-Moloney M, Healy D, Fitzpatrick F, McCormick P, et al.
