Budapest’s Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office has filed a charge of homicide against a 38-year-old Irish man for the alleged murder of an American female tourist in the Hungarian capital in November 2024.<\/p>\n
Mackenzie Michalski, a 31-year-old nurse from the US, had been visiting Budapest and went missing on 4 November 2024.<\/p>\n
Police arrested an Irish male suspect three days later.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old Irish citizen has been held in pre-trial detention for the past 12 months while police completed their investigation into the causes of Ms Michalski’s death.<\/p>\n
In a press statement, released this morning, the Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that it is seeking a prison sentence in the case, without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n
In Hungary, the crime of homicide is punishable with a sentence of five to 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n
In addition, the press statement reads that the prosecutor’s office has requested that the suspect be deported.<\/p>\n
RT\u00c9 News understands that the deportation request would take affect following a prison sentence served in Hungary.<\/p>\n
The Irish man has maintained throughout his pre-trial detention that the cause of Ms Michalski’s death was not intentional.<\/p>\n
He is being represented by a Hungarian lawyer who he communicates with via a translator.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor\u2019s office will submit today’s indictment to the Budapest Metropolitan Court in the coming days, and the court will then decide if the suspect will remain in pre-trial detention.<\/p>\n
