{"id":11984,"date":"2025-09-10T10:51:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T10:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/11984\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T10:51:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T10:51:12","slug":"two-thirds-of-public-hospitals-have-unsafe-bed-occupancy-levels-in-first-half-of-2025-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/11984\/","title":{"rendered":"Two-thirds of public hospitals have unsafe bed-occupancy levels in first half of 2025 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than two-thirds of public hospitals were operating at unsafe levels of bed occupancy in the first six months of this year, new figures show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A number of studies have shown that having too many patients in hospital beds can result in overrun staff, increased levels of hospital-acquired infections, delays in care or cancelled procedures and worse patient outcomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Consequently, a bed occupancy of 85 per cent is generally considered to be the limit at which hospitals are able to work safely and effectively. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hse\/\">Health Service Executive (HSE)<\/a> shows the level of bed occupancy was 95.9 per cent nationally in the first six months of this year, rising from 94.2 per cent during the same period in 2024 and 93.3 per cent in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">There were nine hospitals who  exceeded their bed capacity during this time period, with St Luke\u2019s General Hospital in Kilkenny having the highest occupancy rate at 116.4 per cent, followed by University Hospital Limerick (UHL) at 114 per cent and St Vincent\u2019s in Dublin at 111.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of 31 hospitals had occupancy rates higher than the recommended 85 per cent. However, the figures do not include Galway University Hospitals, as the HSE said the data for these hospitals is \u201cstill being validated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A number of hospitals have low occupancy rates, including the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear hospital (38.2 per cent), and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh (46.9 per cent). South Infirmary Victoria Hospital had an occupancy rate of 58.3 per cent, while Mallow General Hospital\u2019s rate was 62.3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2024\/12\/09\/dr-ronan-glynn-we-cant-build-our-way-out-of-the-capacity-issues-in-the-health-service\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We can\u2019t build our way out of the capacity issues in the health serviceOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In terms of health regions, HSE Mid West, which includes Limerick, had the highest occupancy rate, at 105.4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The figures were released in response to a parliamentary question from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a>\u2019s health spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-cullinane\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/david-cullinane\/\">David Cullinane<\/a>, who said levels were \u201cgoing in the wrong direction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThe bed occupancy levels are way beyond international best practice. We have no room for any surge capacity, which is why, when you have a surge, we have problems in emergency departments and overcrowding. We\u2019re operating on a very dangerous level where we don\u2019t have the beds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Cullinane has called on  Minister for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\">Jennifer Carroll MacNeill<\/a> to be \u201cupfront\u201d about whether there is sufficient funding to deliver the new hospital bed plan that was announced in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2024\/05\/29\/promise-of-almost-3000-additional-hospital-beds-is-welcome-if-government-delivers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Promise of almost 3,000 additional hospital beds is welcome \u2013 if Government deliversOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Stephen McMahon, co-founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-patients-association\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-patients-association\/\">Irish Patients\u2019 Association<\/a>, said many of the issues seen in the health system \u201cstem not from poor medicine but from relentless capacity shortages\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A spokeswoman for the HSE said it and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\">Department of Health<\/a> are working to reduce pressure in hospitals by implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/slaintecare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/slaintecare\/\">Sl\u00e1intecare, the programme which seeks to reform the State\u2019s health service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShifting care from acute services to the community will help reduce demand for hospital beds. This helps people to stay healthy in their own homes and communities for longer, delivering the right care, in the right place, at the right time,\u201d the spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIn line with the capital development plan, new acute and community beds come on stream each year, and they enhance the availability of services.
