{"id":121697,"date":"2025-11-04T18:08:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T18:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/121697\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T18:08:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T18:08:11","slug":"zelenskyy-calls-for-ukraine-to-join-eu-before-2030-after-commission-delivers-warning-on-corruption-as-it-happened-european-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/121697\/","title":{"rendered":"Zelenskyy calls for Ukraine to join EU before 2030 after commission delivers warning on corruption &#8211; as it happened | European Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ukraine&#8217;s Zelenskyy, Moldova&#8217;s Sandu seek to ramp pressure on EU to accelerate accession talks<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jakub_Krupa.png\" alt=\"Jakub Krupa\" class=\"dcr-lysqes\"\/>Jakub Krupa<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In parallel to the commission\u2019s briefing, Ukraine\u2019s Zelenskyy and Moldova\u2019s Maia Sandu spoke at the Euronews\u2019s EU Enlargement Summit offering their reaction to the commission\u2019s assessment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Responding to the findings, they both tried to ramp up pressure on the EU to accelerate the talks, with Zelenskyy saying he would want Ukraine to join the bloc before 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking from the embattled city of Pokrovsk near the frontline, Zelenskyy spoke about Ukrainian soldiers being \u201cat war not only for the sake of their own families, their own homes,\u201d but more broadly \u201cfor the Ukrainian future, the future of Ukraine in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/eu\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Union<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUkraine is fighting for its independence, and our future is in the EU, which is the part of our independence \u2026 and for us, it is an important factor that we are highly assessed in this [report],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Zelenskyy said he \u201cwould not like this [accession] process to be too long,\u201d but acknowledged that this \u201cdoes not depend on us,\u201d as the pace at which the talks can be progressed was decided by the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe quicker Ukraine is able to open the clusters and to have the fully fledged negotiations, the better it is for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also defended the anti-corruption reforms in Ukraine, despite the EU\u2019s pointed criticism in this area (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/nov\/04\/european-union-eu-latest-news-updates-live?page=with%3Ablock-6909f77b8f0842aeb470072a#block-6909f77b8f0842aeb470072a\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">14:10<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Curiously, the Ukrainian president also revealed that he spoke with Donald Trump about Ukraine\u2019s ambitions to become an EU member state, and the US president offered his support and allegedly promised to help unblock Hungary\u2019s veto \u2013 but without a specific timeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Zelenskyy pointedly declined to consider putting forward a special offer to Hungary\u2019s Viktor Orb\u00e1n to get him to drop his veto, and added that his continued opposition to the accession process was only beneficial to Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added: \u201cWe are at war for our survival, and we would really like the prime minister of Hungary to support us, at least not block us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf there are the [accession] rules and we comply with them, whatever is needed to open the clusters, we would like [that] to be respected. And it\u2019s not only [a question of] respect to us, but the respect of the Hungarian leader to the rules and regulations of the European Union,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Moldova\u2019s Sandu struck a similar tone, saying Moldova is ready to open the negotiations on all clusters, and is waiting for the EU to move ahead with the process, which remains stalled as Hungary continues to block progressing both Moldova and Ukraine\u2019s candidacies together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI do understand that there are all kinds of solutions, but you also need to have a timetable to take a decision, a deadline to take a decision on this. Otherwise, they can discuss [it] for a long time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBoth countries are ready to move to the next step. So, it\u2019s now really up to the EU to adopt a decision and to move forward,\u201d Sandu said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere are solutions, but again, these are to be taken by the EU member states and by the EU institutions. It\u2019s not easy, but if the EU becomes a little bit more creative and if you want to solve this issue. I\u2019m sure it can solve it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a stark warning, she said the pro-EU politicians managed to beat Russian disinformation and win the EU referendum, the presidential election and the parliamentary election in the last 24 months, but \u201cif we don\u2019t deliver in the next three years \u2013 we have the presidential elections in three years \u2013 Photograph: \u00dcmit Bekta\u015f\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During Syria\u2019s 14-year civil war, Germany took in more refugees than any other country in the EU, but the chancellor and others in his coalition cabinet argue that the situation has changed since the fall of Bashar al-Assad\u2019s government eleven months ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Merz said late on Tuesday that he expected many of the more than one million Syrians living in Germany would voluntarily return home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere are now no longer any grounds for asylum in Germany, and therefore we can also begin with repatriations,\u201d he said. as it happened&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/nov\/04\/european-union-eu-latest-news-updates-live?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-690a109e8f089c9d9d40d01c#block-690a109e8f089c9d9d40d01c\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Updated at\u00a009.45 EST<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s Zelenskyy, Moldova&#8217;s Sandu seek to ramp pressure on EU to accelerate accession talks<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jakub_Krupa.png\" alt=\"Jakub Krupa\" class=\"dcr-lysqes\"\/>Jakub Krupa<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In parallel to the commission\u2019s briefing, Ukraine\u2019s Zelenskyy and Moldova\u2019s Maia Sandu spoke at the Euronews\u2019s EU Enlargement Summit offering their reaction to the commission\u2019s assessment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Responding to the findings, they both tried to ramp up pressure on the EU to accelerate the talks, with Zelenskyy saying he would want Ukraine to join the bloc before 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking from the embattled city of Pokrovsk near the frontline, Zelenskyy spoke about Ukrainian soldiers being \u201cat war not only for the sake of their own families, their own homes,\u201d but more broadly \u201cfor the Ukrainian future, the future of Ukraine in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/eu\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Union<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUkraine is fighting for its independence, and our future is in the EU, which is the part of our independence \u2026 and for us, it is an important factor that we are highly assessed in this [report],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Zelenskyy said he \u201cwould not like this [accession] process to be too long,\u201d but acknowledged that this \u201cdoes not depend on us,\u201d as the pace at which the talks can be progressed was decided by the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe quicker Ukraine is able to open the clusters and to have the fully fledged negotiations, the better it is for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also defended the anti-corruption reforms in Ukraine, despite the EU\u2019s pointed criticism in this area (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/nov\/04\/european-union-eu-latest-news-updates-live?page=with%3Ablock-6909f77b8f0842aeb470072a#block-6909f77b8f0842aeb470072a\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">14:10<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Curiously, the Ukrainian president also revealed that he spoke with Donald Trump about Ukraine\u2019s ambitions to become an EU member state, and the US president offered his support and allegedly promised to help unblock Hungary\u2019s veto \u2013 but without a specific timeline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Zelenskyy pointedly declined to consider putting forward a special offer to Hungary\u2019s Viktor Orb\u00e1n to get him to drop his veto, and added that his continued opposition to the accession process was only beneficial to Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added: \u201cWe are at war for our survival, and we would really like the prime minister of Hungary to support us, at least not block us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf there are the [accession] rules and we comply with them, whatever is needed to open the clusters, we would like [that] to be respected. And it\u2019s not only [a question of] respect to us, but the respect of the Hungarian leader to the rules and regulations of the European Union,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Moldova\u2019s Sandu struck a similar tone, saying Moldova is ready to open the negotiations on all clusters, and is waiting for the EU to move ahead with the process, which remains stalled as Hungary continues to block progressing both Moldova and Ukraine\u2019s candidacies together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI do understand that there are all kinds of solutions, but you also need to have a timetable to take a decision, a deadline to take a decision on this.
