Ms Ruane said shildren like Sao\u00edrse would have \u201clooked up to the likes of DJ Carey at one point years ago\u201d.<\/p>\n
On Monday, disgraced former hurling star Carey was jailed for five-and-a-half years for conning people out of nearly \u20ac400,000 in a fake cancer scam.<\/p>\n
An infamous photo of Carey that has been circulated widely online shows him posing with a phone charger up his nose while pretending to have cancer. <\/p>\n
\u201cI just find that photo so triggering, because our personal experience was that here she needed to be fed that way,\u201d Ms Ruane told RT\u00c9\u2019s Liveline.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I remember countless conversations with the consultant about what way we’d go about it, because, as DJ Carey showed there, with a charger for a phone, that is the nasogastric version of how people have to be fed when they’re too ill, or they’re too weak or they’re losing weight rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Galway woman described how her daughter had struggled to keep food down but wished not to be fitted with the tube for fear she would be viewed as \u201cdifferent\u201d. <\/p>\n
“She didn’t want her friends in school to look at her any differently.<\/p>\n
“So the decision was made at that time that we would do the gastrostomy instead, which went through the tummy, so it was like a peg feed.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you see this photo, and you think, My God, how low do you stoop?\u201d<\/p>\n
Carey had pretended for years he was unwell, tricking 22 friends and acquaintances into paying for his supposed treatment. <\/p>\n
He blamed his \u201cdesperate\u201d financial circumstances for the fraud.<\/p>\n
Roseanna and her husband Ollie had fundraised money while Sao\u00edrse was unwell and said she is appalled by the fraud Carey committed. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we fundraised for Sao\u00edrse it was Covid, thinking people are going through such a difficult time, and to think that they put their hands in their pocket, that that generosity was there in a country and further afield, to want to help someone in despair,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
“That is genuine, and that is fantastic to see that support, but to do that in a fraudulent way, I don’t think five and a half years or 15 and a half years [is enough].<\/p>\n
“It will never forgive that,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n
Judge Martin Nolan branded Carey\u2019s behaviour “reprehensible\u201d as he handed down his sentence on Monday. <\/p>\n
