A faith healer whom DJ Carey<\/a> claimed miraculously cured him of cancer has said he did not realise somebody \u201ccould stoop to that level\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking on RT\u00c9<\/a>\u2019s Prime Time on Tuesday, S\u00e9amus Byrne of St Gemma\u2019s Healing Ministry in Kilkenny<\/a> told how Carey had called him in October 2019, claiming to be seeking healing through prayer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people come with the various different things \u2013 could be cancer, heart problems, MS, whatever, depression, all sorts of difficulties … you work with them, you pray with them, and you do the very best you can to help them out,\u201d Mr Byrne said.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that the former Kilkenny hurling legend had been jailed for 5\u00bd years<\/a> for inducing 22 people to give him about \u20ac400,000 to fund treatment for cancer that he did not have.<\/p>\n

A Prime Time report on Carey\u2019s fraudulent activities revealed letters were used to outline Carey\u2019s treatment for a rare blood cancer, multiple myeloma, including the falsified signatures of doctors in the United States and England.<\/p>\n

Two such bogus letters were supplied to the accountant of businessman Denis O\u2019Brien, who gave Carey \u20ac125,000 and $13,000 over a nine-year period.<\/p>\n

Mr Byrne is one of several people who were deceived by Carey. <\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody rang me to know would I pray with him, that he had this cancer problem,\u201d Mr Byrne told RT\u00c9.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018okay\u2019, as I would\u2019ve done with many others. They wanted me to talk to him privately in a private room … I could understand that because of his public image at the time. <\/p>\n

\u201cI brought him into a private room, dealt with him, prayed with him,\u201d Mr Byrne said.<\/p>\n

Carey later told people that praying with the faith healer had cured him.<\/p>\n

He \u201csupposedly had a great healing\u201d, Mr Byrne said but it \u201cnow turns out that he didn\u2019t even have cancer\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sad that anybody would abuse or use anybody\u2019s ministry like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Byrne said he didn\u2019t realise that somebody could \u201cstoop to that level\u201d, adding that it was \u201cvery disappointing because I really always thought very highly of the man\u201d.<\/p>\n

In return for the alleged healing, Carey promised Mr Byrne he would buy him a car and a \u20ac1,000 deposit was paid to a local garage. However, Carey never came through with the balance to finalise the purchase.<\/p>\n
