{"id":12621,"date":"2025-09-10T17:12:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T17:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/12621\/"},"modified":"2025-09-10T17:12:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T17:12:07","slug":"the-ai-movie-factory-is-ramping-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/12621\/","title":{"rendered":"The AI Movie Factory Is Ramping Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cBecause I know the rooster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThose were the words of a Baghdad-based director named Hasan Hadi when asked how he was able to corral not just a host of non-actor children for his new movie but a particular kind of junglefowl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHadi \u2013 his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-presidents-cake-review-iraqi-schoolgirl-tragicomic-gem-1236215460\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-presidents-cake-review-iraqi-schoolgirl-tragicomic-gem-1236215460\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The President\u2019s Cake<\/a>\u00a0will come out this fall from Sony Pictures Classics and was just chosen as the official Iraqi Oscar submission \u2013 made the comment to a pair of reporters at a dinner at the Toronto International Film Festival. While among the more colorful \u2013 and barnyardy \u2013 of the remarks uttered at the important early-September gathering, it was far from the only one emphasizing the uniquely human qualities of filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAcross the Canadian city, directors made statements that, as the algorithm rises, almost take on a political cast. Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke stood in front of an audience and described the painstaking rehearsal for their movie about Lorenz Hart. (\u201cEthan and I have done our share of dialogue-intensive movies,\u201d Linklater said, \u201cbut this was something else.\u201d) Nia DaCosta talked about how her feelings on Ibsen animated her need to redo\u00a0Hedda Gabler. Paul Greengrass left audiences breathless with his latest neo-verite adventure that has Matthew McConaughey as an embattled bus driver saving children in the 2018 Paradise wildfires. None of them mentioned AI explicitly. They didn\u2019t have to. Their pro-human vehemence was evident in every quote and frame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOne filmmaker who did mention AI did so with stridency. Guillermo del Toro, whose Pinocchio was conceived as an ode to the human over the machine, was emphatic on the subject. \u201c[We live in] a world that now wants to tell us loud and clear that art is not important; they want to insist it can be done by an app, that it can be done by anyone,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lI6X7f7kQA4?si=3bNBGPtULLZ-GvzL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said at the TIFF gala<\/a>, where he received an award. \u201cWe cannot allow that to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut a different, more computer-enabled vision of Hollywood was also playing out at the industry\u2019s big convocation, as tech entrepreneurs pitched their own vision to the entertainment decisionmakers. People from Largo, which builds models to test movies using virtual audiences. Gennie, which uses Google\u2019s VEO-3 to help documentarians create re-enactment footage with the push of a button. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/luma\/\" id=\"auto-tag_luma_1\" data-tag=\"luma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luma<\/a> AI, whose executives believe studios can deploy their video-generation tool to ramp up production (and ramp down sets); its chief executive laid out a vision at THR\u2019s Access Canada Summit in which studios could survive only by producing 1,000 movies every year with a massive assist from AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAll of them were at TIFF too, trying to enact their own vision of the entertainment future. And while they rarely crossed paths with the humanists, they clashed with them ideologically just the same. Hollywood may only be big enough for one them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPull the camera back and you\u2019ll suddenly see the same battle playing out everywhere, in boardrooms and courtrooms. Warner Bros. has just sued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/midjourney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_midjourney_1\" data-tag=\"midjourney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Midjourney<\/a>, making similar allegations as Disney and Universal before it against the image-generation startup. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/anthropic\/\" id=\"auto-tag_anthropic_1\" data-tag=\"anthropic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthropic<\/a> has just agreed to settle with three authors who sued the AI company for training its models on their books. If the settlement is approved, it could result in the company paying a total of $1.5 billion to hundreds of thousands of authors \u2013 but the judge in the case also cleared the way for tech companies to engage in such training without permission so long as they bought retail copies of the books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSeeking to convey\u00a0the stakes, two activists, Guido Reichstadter and Michael Trazzi, have gone on hunger strikes\u00a0outside the\u00a0San Francisco office of Anthropic and\u00a0London office of\u00a0Google\u2019s DeepMind respectively.\u00a0They say they won\u2019t eat any food until the companies stop developing all new\u00a0AI\u00a0models,\u00a0giving both a visual and historical dimension to the conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMeanwhile, the startup Showrunner, with investment from Amazon, made waves when it said it would use AI for an internal experiment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/orson-welles-lost-movie-ai-1236361881\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/orson-welles-lost-movie-ai-1236361881\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to restore some 43 minutes<\/a> of lost footage from Orson Welles\u2019\u00a0The Magnificent Ambersons.\u00a0The announcement generated a backlash from the company managing Welles\u2019 estate, which an official there calling the move a \u201cpurely mechanical exercise\u201d that lacked \u201cuniquely innovative thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd of course The Sphere just opened an AI-enabled re-formatted\u00a0The Wizard of Oz, aided by Google and $80 million (a budget $15 million higher than the original\u2019s in 2025 dollars). While eliciting rave reviews, the project also added in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/james-dolan-david-zaslav-characters-sphere-wizard-of-oz-1236356200\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/digital\/james-dolan-david-zaslav-characters-sphere-wizard-of-oz-1236356200\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cameos<\/a> for the CEOs David Zaslav and James Dolan who were not, according to most film historians, present on the 1939 MGM set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter years of companies building tech and raising money, the introduction of AI into the house of storytelling is finally here. And media players need to decide whether they want to make up the guest bedroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt would also be a mistake to think AI will only be used on classic films \u2013 on films with few stakeholders. The tools pitched and implemented would be used to create what was once done by hand on sets and in marketing departments, automating the analogue, with all the labor and cultural consequences to go with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt a hearing for the Anthropic settlement, one of the author plaintiffs, Kirk Wallace Johnson, said he saw the proceeding as the \u201cbeginning of a fight on behalf of humans that don\u2019t believe we have to sacrifice everything on the altar of AI.\u201d Johnson is the author of\u00a0The Feather Thief, a critically acclaimed 2018 true-crime book about a heist that made off with scores of centuries-old historical bird skins.
