One of Clare\u2019s newest businesses has won its battle with the local authority to retain a unique shopfront design.<\/p>\n
In June, Clare County Council had ruled that Gino\u2019s Italian Limited was out of character with adjacent buildings in Ennis.<\/p>\n
A distinctive feature of the Gino\u2019s franchise, is a completely open storefront, which is clearly on display at 18 O\u2019Connell Street.<\/p>\n
However the unique entrance had never received planning permission and was subsequently reported to Clare County Council.<\/p>\n
After applying for permission to retain the design in June, Gino\u2019s request was refused by the local authority on the grounds that the store is out of character with surrounding businesses and is within an Architectural Conservation Area.<\/p>\n
The local authority also highlighted the style, materials and entrance size of Ginos as aspects that differ from traditional window front designs in the town centre.<\/p>\n
Gino\u2019s subsequently appealed the decision to An Coimisi\u00fan Plean\u00e1la, arguing that the shopfront is an attractive design and is in use at similar architectural heritage sites nationwide.<\/p>\n
It also states that the former shopfront replaced was of little architectural merit, having been in place for 20 years, consisting of plywood sheets and softwood framed windows.<\/p>\n
After reviewing the case An Coimis\u00fan Plean\u00e1la Inspector Adam Kearney recommended that the doorway access to Ginos should be reduced to a maximum width of 60% of the available shop frontage.<\/p>\n
