There are two types to be concerned about.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The first is low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, which is considered bad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/g19546521\/best-and-worst-foods-your-cholesterol\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/g19546521\/best-and-worst-foods-your-cholesterol\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cholesterol\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cholesterol<\/a> and can cause fatty buildup of plaque in your arteries. This can narrow the arteries and restrict blood flow and oxygen to your heart, increasing your risk for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43714816\/stroke-vs-heart-attack-differences\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43714816\/stroke-vs-heart-attack-differences\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"heart attack\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heart attack<\/a>, stroke, or peripheral artery disease, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/cholesterol\/hdl-good-ldl-bad-cholesterol-and-triglycerides\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/cholesterol\/hdl-good-ldl-bad-cholesterol-and-triglycerides\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"American Heart Association\" data-node-id=\"1.5\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Heart Association<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The second type is high-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is often called good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a26435365\/why-is-my-cholesterol-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a26435365\/why-is-my-cholesterol-high\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cholesterol\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cholesterol<\/a>. It\u2019s believed that a healthy level could reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke, according to AHA. If we reduce bad cholesterol, we know that good things happen, or those bad outcomes are reduced. So, when you quit, it improves heart health and can raise HDL cholesterol, Kimberlain says. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24252691\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24252691\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Research\" data-node-id=\"42.2\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Research<\/a> shows that ex-smokers tend to have higher HDL cholesterol than smokers.  <\/p>\n<p>Talk to Your Doctor About Medication <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"44\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you\u2019ve tried making lifestyle changes to raise your HDL and lower your LDL and they\u2019re not working, Dr. Mohanty suggests talking to your doctor. You might need to take cholesterol-lowering medications, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a38896524\/starting-statins-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a38896524\/starting-statins-what-to-know\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"statins\" data-node-id=\"44.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statins<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>How Easy Is It to Increase HDL Cholesterol? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"46\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">IT CAN TAKE a few weeks to a few months to see improvements in your cholesterol levels, Dr. Mohanty says. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"47\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cTypically, we&#8217;ll give them at least three months, if not more, to institute some lifestyle modifying factors and then test again and see what kind of changes they&#8217;ve made,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"48\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Sometimes, people are prescribed medication, while also being encouraged to make lifestyle changes, like increasing fiber, exercising more, and improving diets overall, Dr. Mohanty adds.
