{"id":133032,"date":"2025-11-10T23:38:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T23:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/133032\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T23:38:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T23:38:10","slug":"adjaye-associates-completes-the-studio-museum-in-dialogue-with-harlem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/133032\/","title":{"rendered":"Adjaye Associates completes the Studio Museum &#8220;in dialogue&#8221; with Harlem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/adjaye-associates\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adjaye Associates<\/a> has unveiled the Studio Museum in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/harlem\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harlem<\/a>, New York City, ahead of its opening later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Located on the busy Dr Martin Luther King Boulevard, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiomuseum.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Museum in Harlem<\/a> replaces a former bank building on the same site, which was converted in 1982 to house the museum&#8217;s art collection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267658 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/the-studio-museum-harlem-adjaye-associates-_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x577.jpg\" alt=\"Studio Museum in Harlem\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1600\"  \/>Adjaye Associates has completed the Studio Museum in Harlem<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled to open to the public on 15 November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2015\/07\/07\/david-adjaye-studio-museum-harlem-new-york-african-american-art\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">designs for the project were released in 2015<\/a> with the building breaking ground in 2018, preceding British architect David Adjaye&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/07\/04\/david-adjaye-accused-sexual-misconduct-three-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accusations of sexual misconduct<\/a>, which he denies.<\/p>\n<p>It will house the museum&#8217;s permanent collection of work by artists of African descent, as well as rotating exhibitions of work by Black artists and an artist-in-residence program, among other public programming.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267659 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/the-studio-museum-harlem-adjaye-associates-_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Studio Museum Harlem\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The museum is home to nearly 9,000 works by artists of African descent<\/p>\n<p>The building&#8217;s seven storeys of partitioned, stacked volumes made of a dark-grey precast concrete take cues from the brownstones and churches of Harlem, according to the studio.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Externally, the building is in dialogue with Harlem and its rich artistic and cultural landscape; the surrounding masonry architecture is reflected in the museum&#8217;s porous sculptural facade of precast concrete and glass,&#8221; said the team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Distinctly playing on familiar local architectural tropes, the design uses frames, apertures, and doorways as a visual language, presenting a collage of stacked volumes of differing sizes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267656 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/the-studio-museum-harlem-adjaye-associates-_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Studio Museum Harlem\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>An &#8220;inverted stoop&#8221; leads to the lower level<\/p>\n<p>A smooth texture clads the perimeters of each volume, while solid, interior panels were sandblasted.<\/p>\n<p>Ribbon windows and deep, illuminated &#8220;art niches&#8221; are also interspersed throughout the facade, which are designed to display sculptures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267666 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/the-studio-museum-harlem-adjaye-associates-_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Studio Museum Harlem\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A terrazzo staircase leads up through the centre of the building<\/p>\n<p>The building&#8217;s entrance is located just slightly below ground and is lined with a brass doorway. The entry level leads downwards to the building&#8217;s lower level via a wide, wooden stair called a &#8220;reverse stoop&#8221; by the studio.<\/p>\n<p>This bottom floor contains a cafe and welcome centre and doubles as a double-height performance hall, while the lobby is located on the entry level.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/31\/adjaye-associates-princeton-university-art-museum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/adjaye-concrete-princeton-art-museum_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Princeton university art museum\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Adjaye Associates-designed Princeton University Art Museum opens\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A dark grey, monolithic terrazzo stair runs through the centre of the building and connects the lower level to the fourth floor, while the fifth floor is dedicated to meeting spaces and the sixth floor contains a roof terrace.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibition spaces are located on the mezzanine levels that wrap around the stairs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267664 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/the-studio-museum-harlem-adjaye-associates-_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x557.jpg\" alt=\"Studio Museum Harlem\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1546\"  \/>Exhibition spaces are located in the mezzanine levels surrounding the stair<\/p>\n<p>Upon the museum&#8217;s opening, the galleries will show pieces from its permanent collection along with work by the alumni of its artists-in-residence program and archival documents of the museum&#8217;s history and work by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiomuseum.org\/artists\/tom-lloyd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Lloyd<\/a>, who created the inaugural exhibit in 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Interior materials include wood and terrazzo panelling, with gypsum board walls and ceilings, while furniture throughout the building is by Black designers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ini-archibong\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ini Archibong<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/stephen-burks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Burks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The building&#8217;s rooftop terrace is located behind its uppermost volume and contains a black, pyramid volume at the centre, which looks into the centre of the building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2267667 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/the-studio-museum-harlem-adjaye-associates-_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x594.jpg\" alt=\"Studio Museum Harlem\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1648\"  \/>A pyramid volume sits at the centre of the rooftop terrace<\/p>\n<p>The Studio Museum in Harlem was founded by a group of artists, activists, philanthropists and Harlem residents in the 1960s to showcase work by artists of African descent and rectify exclusion from mainstream museums, commercial art galleries, and other institutions.<\/p>\n<p>In the works for a decade, this recent expansion is the second major project completed by Adjaye Associates following Adjaye&#8217;s accusations that were revealed in 2023.
