Catherine Connolly will be inaugurated as the 10th President of Ireland at Aras an Uachtarain on Tuesday following her election win with 914,143 first preference votes.<\/p>\n

Her inauguration comes the day after the previous president, Michael D Higgins\u2019s term ended, as required by the Constitution of Ireland.<\/p>\n

It marks the start of a seven-year term for Ms Connolly in the country\u2019s highest office.<\/p>\n

The inauguration will take place in St Patrick\u2019s Hall in Dublin Castle where members of Government, the Oireachtas, judges and guests of the in-coming president will be present.<\/p>\n

After a brief fanfare, including the raising of the Presidential Standard over Dublin Castle, the playing of the national anthem, Amhran na bhFiann, by the Army Band No 1 and a 21-gun salute, the President is presented with the presidential seal by the Chief Justice of Ireland, which is used to authenticate documents signed by the President.<\/p>\n

President Connolly is expected to use her first address to the country to highlight her priorities and vision for Ireland before being driven through Dublin city to Aras an Uachtarain<\/p>\n

The ceremony marks the start of a term in which the new president will represent Ireland internationally, sign bills into law, and serve as commander-in-chief of the Defence Forces.<\/p>\n

And for the public, who can watch proceedings live on RTE, it is a chance to witness history, celebrate democratic traditions, and see how the newest head of State intends to lead the nation<\/p>\n
