{"id":13418,"date":"2025-09-11T02:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T02:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/13418\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T02:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T02:23:10","slug":"former-limerick-senior-hurling-manager-reported-to-gardai-amid-council-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/13418\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Limerick senior hurling manager reported to gardai amid council protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIMERICK City and County Council officials have reported former county hurling manager Tom Ryan to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/463\/crime-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">gardai<\/a>, after he blocked a waterway from entering his land amid a long-running dispute with the local authority.<\/p>\n<p>Solicitors for the council have, in a letter to the dairy farmer, stated that his action is \u201cunlawful\u201d and is a \u201ccriminal offence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And they have also confirmed the council will seek High Court orders to stop his action if it continues.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/crime-and-courts\/1890067\/limerick-gardai-seize-big-wrap-of-cocaine-from-man-acting-suspiciously.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick gardai seize big wrap of cocaine from man acting suspiciously<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Ryan, based in Ballynoe, Mungret, has been in dispute with the council about what he describes as \u201cpollution and severe flooding\u201d emanating from Raheen Industrial Estate.<\/p>\n<p>He has said when the business park was founded, council created a canal on Loughmore Common to take surplus water off the industrial estate, which he says is \u201ccontaminating\u201d his land and harming his livestock.<\/p>\n<p>Below: Tom Ryan&#8217;s land in Mungret (Picture: Adrian Butler)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/32816382-1757501580728.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1300\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Ryan &#8211; who managed the Limerick\u2019s senior hurlers to two Munster titles in the 1990s &#8211; has appealed against many of the council\u2019s decisions to approve changes or expansions to factories in the industrial estate which adjoin his land. For its part, the council has previously provided information on the testing regime it has carried out in the canal, pointing out that these have not recorded any exceedance of ammonia, or hydrocarbons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny recorded exceedances in 2022 were inconsistent and did not indicate any pattern of relate to any samples within the business park,\u201d the council wrote in a statement provided to RTE Prime Time, which in 2022 carried out an investigation into M Ryan\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p>This Monday, Mr Ryan said council staff attended the perimeter of his farmland, where he had set up the blockade.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed they spent around one hour beside his land dismantling the materials which were put in place to block the flow of the Loughmore Canal.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mr Ryan has since declared that he will continue his action, and is planning to again set up the barricade which will stop the Loughmore Canal from flowing onto his farm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be blocked again. I\u2019ll keep doing this, and we\u2019ll keep meeting. It\u2019s war,\u201d Mr Ryan told the Limerick Leader this Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He also said he will be blocking another part of his land, where water flows in from neighbouring sites.<\/p>\n<p>The letter issued from the council\u2019s solicitors last Friday, advising the farmer had been reported to the gardai, was sent in response to an email Mr Ryan had imparted to Vincent Murray, the council\u2019s director of planning and placemaking, warning of the action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTom Ryan is taking no more pollution.
