{"id":136644,"date":"2025-11-13T00:51:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T00:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/136644\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T00:51:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T00:51:08","slug":"ireland-overshoots-greenhouse-gas-limits-by-10m-tonnes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/136644\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland overshoots greenhouse gas limits by 10m tonnes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ireland has overshot its greenhouse gas limits this year by more than 10 times the annual emissions from a city like Cork.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland\u2019s carbon budgets, which allocate emissions ceilings to the likes of motorists, households, farmers, businesses, and industry in five-year cycles, aimed to reduce emissions by 4.8% a year from 2021 to 2025 under the first block, while the 2026-2030 budget will increase that annual reduction target to 8.3%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Instead of the maximum emissions of 295m tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent set out in the Carbon Budget 2021-2025, the State will overshoot by about 10m tonnes, the independent Climate Change Advisory Council found in its annual review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This is equivalent to the yearly pollution from roughly 4.5m to 7m cars, depending on the average emissions of the vehicles, or 10 times the emissions of a city the size of Cork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Research in 2023 found that most of the city\u2019s emissions came from private households, transport, and industry.<\/p>\n<p>            CLIMATE &amp; SUSTAINABILITY <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/sustainability\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HUB<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">&#8216;Overshoot must be paid back&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Climate Council has warned that while progress in cutting emissions has been made, this overshoot will need to be \u201cpaid back\u201d in the next Carbon Budget period (2026-2030).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The biggest blockage to Ireland\u2019s progress remains our dependence on expensive, harmful fossil fuels, which were subsidised by \u20ac4.7bn of taxpayers\u2019 money in 2024, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Transport emissions remain stubbornly high, the Climate Council said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Both the Government and the public can do more collectively and individually to make significant emissions reductions,&#8221; it said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;The Council calls for increased expenditure on public transport ensuring efficient, reliable and timely services, increased grants for less expensive electric vehicles (EVs) and the rapid implementation of a demand management strategy to help drive down emissions in this sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The council has previously warned that Ireland faces up to \u20ac26bn in fines if it fails to meet EU targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the coming years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ireland has overshot its greenhouse gas limits this year by more than 10 times the annual emissions from&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":136645,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[1153,2885,61,60,43],"class_list":["post-136644","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ireland","tag-sustainability","tag-climate-change","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/136644","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=136644"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/136644\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/136645"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=136644"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=136644"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=136644"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
