{"id":138756,"date":"2025-11-14T03:30:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T03:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/138756\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T03:30:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T03:30:20","slug":"a-10-slide-in-us-visitor-numbers-would-have-painful-impact-on-irish-tourism-sector-report-warns-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/138756\/","title":{"rendered":"A 10% slide in US visitor numbers would have \u2018painful impact\u2019 on Irish tourism sector, report warns \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A 10 per cent fall in US holidaymakers would cost the Irish economy more than \u20ac190 million, tourist chiefs calculate in a report warning that the industry depends heavily on high-spending transatlantic visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Official figures indicate that the number of US visitors to the Republic this year will top the 1.2 million who holidayed here in 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-tourist-industry-confederation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-tourist-industry-confederation\/\">Irish Tourism Industry Confederation<\/a> (Itic) says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Business from the US remained healthy in what was a challenging year for the industry, Itic notes in a report published on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But it cautions that \u201ca modest dip in US visitor numbers would have a painful impact on Irish tourism\u201d, requiring significant growth in numbers from other countries to compensate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA 10 per cent decline in visits from the US would equate to 124,000 fewer US visitors and a reduction in visitor expenditure of close to \u20ac191 million,\u201c Itic said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/transport-and-tourism\/no-room-for-complacency-in-tourist-industry-despite-record-year-itic-1.3339607\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018No room for complacency\u2019 in tourist industry despite record year\u2013 ITICOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The organisation argues that developing new routes that will open the Republic to visitors from Asia would help counter the dependence on transatlantic business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US tourists spend three times as much as those from Britain and close to twice what holidaymakers from other EU states spend here, with a corresponding impact should their numbers start dwindling, the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), US visitors spent an average of \u20ac1,538 during their holidays here in 2024, against \u20ac884 for EU tourists and \u20ac509 for British holidaymakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their spend per night was the highest also, at \u20ac182, compared with \u20ac111 for continental Europeans and \u20ac105 for the British, says the CSO. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Consequently, the State would have to lure holidaymakers in far greater numbers from Britain and the EU to make up for transatlantic losses, the Itic report notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As would be \u201ca stretch\u201d the confederation says it makes more sense to target other long-haul, higher spending markets, such as Asia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A weakening dollar could cut hit US numbers. It traded at around $1.08 to the euro in the years after the pandemic, but that went to $1.16 in 2025, the report noted.
