Portuguese media were critical of Cristiano Ronaldo<\/a> as they pored over their nation\u2019s defeat<\/a> to Ireland<\/a> in their World Cup qualifier on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Ronaldo was sent off for violent conduct<\/a> in the second half, for elbowing Irish defender Dara O\u2019Shea<\/a> and left Portugal battling from two goals behind with 10 men.<\/p>\n

Marco Vaza of P\u00fablico called Ronaldo his flop of the match, writing that Ronaldo had said \u201cO\u2019Shea was a crybaby, saw the red card, and still went to say something to the Irish coach\u201d. He also criticised Ronaldo\u2019s mental composure.<\/p>\n

\u201cPortugal had Al-Nassr\u2019s attacking front on the field, with Ronaldo and Felix, and the ball always went to them. There wasn\u2019t a single good decision they made,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOccasionally, Joao Neves or Vitinha would do something. But it was very little. It was all very bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ronaldo was called uninspiring in A Bola, as his 2\/10 rating was made worse by his replacement at centre forward Goncalo Ramos getting a 6\/10, who \u201cdid more in 12 or 13 minutes than Ronaldo, Felix and Bernardo combined\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Spanish newspaper AS went further and called Ronaldo\u2019s performance \u201cdisgraceful\u201d and considered Troy Parrott<\/a> to be \u201cmuch cooler\u201d and \u201cmore mature\u201d than the Portuguese captain. Parrott was unsurprisingly named man of the match in several outlets.<\/p>\n

The decision of the referee Glenn Nyberg, via VAR, was generally accepted in the Portuguese despite Portugal manager Roberto Mart\u00ednez saying it was harsh.<\/p>\n

Vaza in P\u00fablico wrote that there was a collective sloppiness to Portugal, who had treated their qualification as a formality, and pointed the blame at Mart\u00ednez.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone knew how Ireland would play. Mart\u00ednez knew this, Ronaldo knew this, Joao F\u00e9lix knew this, the kit men knew that. But Portugal did not learn from their previous encounter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout speed, without collective awareness, without individual flair, the national team simply existed on the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mart\u00ednez came in for pointed criticism from Mariana Fernandes at Observador, who highlighted that Portugal have now lost five of their last 20 games, and failed to score in eight of them. She wrote that Portugal\u2019s campaign was below expectations. <\/p>\n

She emphasised Mart\u00ednez\u2019s comments rubbishing criticisms from the first game against Ireland, and wrote \u201cthe national team had an inexcusable day \u2013 especially for those who always have excuses for everything.\u201d Mart\u00ednez had to field a question in the press conference asking if he was in a position to continue leading the national team.<\/p>\n

A Bola agreed with Mart\u00ednez that everything that could go wrong, went wrong, with a clever headline: \u201cPortugal wrote its own Murphy\u2019s Law in red\u201d.<\/p>\n

Afonzo Santos described Ireland\u2019s attack as \u201cracehorses\u201d. Ogbene, Azaz and Parrott were \u201cthree sprinters always ready to attack at the slightest slip-up\u201d. He described Parrott\u2019s first goal as a \u201cdeafening explosion of joy\u201d as the Portuguese players were \u201cincredulous\u201d. Ireland sitting back was mentioned but not as emphasised in the previous match and their speed in attack was praised. \u201cThe three were a constant threat, and Portugal never managed to counter these transitions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fallout continued after the game as Manuel Casaca of O Jogo reported that Bernardo Dias and R\u00faben Dias were involved in \u201cverbal flashes\u201d with the sizeable section of Portuguese fans behind the goal.
