Virgil van Dijk<\/a>\u2018s disallowed header in Liverpool\u2019s 3-0 defeat to Man City<\/a> should have stood, according to the Premier League<\/a>\u2018s established key match incidents panel.<\/p>\n

Van Dijk saw an equalising goal ruled out in the first half of Sunday\u2019s loss at the Etihad, which would have brought the tie back to 1-1 with 38 minutes played.<\/p>\n

The issue was raised by linesman Stuart Burt, who judged Andy Robertson<\/a> to have impeded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma\u2019s vision from an offside position, and referee Chris Kavanagh upheld the decision.<\/p>\n

VAR Michael Oliver chose not to intervene, meaning Van Dijk\u2019s goal was disallowed and Liverpool went on to lose 3-0 as Arne Slot<\/a> rued momentum lost.<\/p>\n

Premier League panel: Robertson offside was incorrect<\/p>\n

According to the Times<\/a>\u2018 Martin Hardy, the Premier League<\/a>\u2018s key match incidents panel (KMI) judged that the decision to rule out the goal was incorrect.<\/p>\n

The KMI panel, which consists of three former players or coaches, one Premier League<\/a> representative and one from the PGMOL, declared that Van Dijk\u2019s equaliser should have stood.<\/p>\n

Oliver was absolved of any blame, however, with no intervention required according to the panel.<\/p>\n

That comes as VAR cannot be used to overturn an objective offside decision, with Robertson in an offside position and \u2013 as per an official statement<\/a> \u2013 \u201cmaking an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s line of vision. I think he\u2019s been impacted, mate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kavanagh (referee): \u201cOK so, offside then.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burt: \u201cI think offside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kavanagh: \u201cOn-field decision is offside.\u201d <\/p>\n

Oliver: \u201cSo, you\u2019ve got clear offside position. You\u2019ve got movement\u2026have you got a high-behind to show how high he is in terms of line of vision?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tim Wood (AVAR): \u201cI agree with the on-field decision. I think it\u2019s offside. It\u2019s a clear and obvious action which clearly impacts on the goalkeeper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver: \u201cChris, it\u2019s Michael. Confirming the on-field decision of offside against Andy Robertson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is in an offside position, very close to the goalkeeper and makes an obvious movement directly in front of him. Check complete, offside.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

It was Kavanagh and, primarily, Burt\u2019s interpretation of the offside which was the issue.<\/p>\n

This raises questions over how a linesman could determine whether Robertson had blocked Donnarumma\u2019s vision from a side-on view far away from the action.<\/p>\n

Liverpool contacted PGMOL chief Howard Webb shortly after the game to raise their concerns with the officiating and Webb subsequently defended the decision<\/a> in an appearance on Match Officials Mic\u2019d Up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe officials have to make a judgment: did that clear action impact on Donnarumma, the goalkeeper, and his ability to save the ball? And that\u2019s where the subjectivity comes into play,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously that\u2019s the conclusion they drew on that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey looked at that position, they looked at that action, so close to the goalkeeper, and they formed that opinion.<\/p>\n
