The Science Museum<\/a> has been handed a enormous wad of cash and it\u2019s planning to use it transform its largest gallery space.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thanks to a whopping eight-figure donation from the\u00a0Serum Institute of India (the world\u2019s largest vaccine manufacturer), the museum\u2019s 20-year-old Making the Modern World gallery will be transformed and re-open in 2028 as Ages of Invention: The Serum Institute Gallery.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t know that exact amount of money that\u2019s been\u00a0injected into the museum, but it\u2019s apparently the\u00a0largest international donation in its history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the moment, the Making of the Modern World gallery has six different zones presenting some iconic and everyday items that have shaped\u00a0how we\u00a0live today.\u00a0Among the fascinating stuff on the display, there\u2019s\u00a0the first Apple computer, a porcelain bowl salvaged from Hiroshima,\u00a0penicillin from Ian Fleming\u2019s lab, the world’s oldest surviving steam locomotive, \u2018Puffing Billy\u2019, and Tracy, one of the world\u2019s first transgenic sheep.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The refurb is being designed by\u00a0Lawson Ward Studio. Led by architects\u00a0Hannah Lawson and Georgina Ward (who are also currently working with the Courtauld Institute of Art<\/a>, the Wallace Collection<\/a> and the Natural History Museum<\/a>), the new and improved gallery will \u2018draw on the existing architectural features of the space, utilising natural light, the double height\u00a0and the largest gallery space in the museum\u2019.\u00a0Like the Making of the Modern World gallery, it\u2019ll span 250 years of inventions and, don\u2019t worry, the artefacts\u00a0that are on\u00a0display right now won\u2019t be going anywhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sir Ian Blatchford, Director and Chief Executive of the Science Museum Group, said: \u2018Through our ambitious new Ages of Invention: The Serum Institute Gallery we will create the most significant display of objects from the history of science anywhere in the world. Visitors will be able to journey through 250 years of innovation and explore the scientific ideas shaping our lives today.\u2019<\/p>\n
