\n\tJonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley<\/a>, the duo behind \u201cDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves\u201d and the screenplay for \u201cSpider-Man: Homecoming,\u201d are enlisting in Starfleet. They\u2019ve been hired to write, produce and direct a new \u201cStar Trek<\/a>\u201d film that will seek to revitalize the franchise after it has languished for nearly a decade without a big screen adventure.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, as Variety previously reported<\/a>, the new film will not be a continuation of the J.J. Abrams-led reboot of the series and won\u2019t feature Chris Pine or any of the actors from those movies (Pine starred in Goldstein and Daley\u2019s \u201cD&D\u201d film). In fact, while plot details are being kept under wraps, this project is not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects. So you\u2019re out of luck Jean-Luc Picard and Kathryn Janeway!<\/p>\n

\n\tSince \u201cStar Trek Beyond\u201d opened in 2016, the road to mounting a new film in the franchise has been bumpier than a Klingon\u2019s forehead. Chris Hemsworth almost returned as the (seemingly deceased) father of Capt. Kirk from 2009\u2019s \u201cStar Trek.\u201d Quentin Tarantino almost directed a \u201cStar Trek\u201d movie set in a world of 1930s gangsters. Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman each got so close to directing a \u201cStar Trek\u201d movie that sets were being built, but neither project came to fruition, and both filmmakers moved onto other franchises, Hawley with FX\u2019s \u201cAlien: Earth\u201d and Shakman with Marvel\u2019s \u201cThe Fantastic Four: First Steps.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2024, Variety reported<\/a> that Steve Yockey (\u201cThe Flight Attendant\u201d) was writing a draft for the \u201cfinal chapter\u201d \u201cTrek\u201d movie starring the cast led by Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Salda\u00f1a. And Toby Haynes (\u201cAndor\u201d) had been tapped to direct a \u201cStar Trek\u201d origin story written by Seth Grahame-Smith (\u201cAbraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter\u201d). But now both productions appear to be stranded in deep space with life support failing.<\/p>\n

\n\tGetting a new \u201cStar Trek\u201d out of dry-dock has been a priority for Paramount since David Ellison\u2019s Skydance took control of the company in August, because the series is one of the most enduring properties in the studio\u2019s library. Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are known to Ellison and company, having recently written, directed, and produced the Skydance film \u201cMayday\u201d starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, which they produced through their GoldDay banner. It will premiere on Apple TV+.<\/p>\n

\n\tDaley and Goldstein previously helmed New Line\u2019s comedy \u201cGame Night,\u201d and wrote and directed the studio\u2019s \u201cVacation\u201d reboot. The duo\u2019s additional writing credits include \u201cHorrible Bosses\u201d and \u201cCloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.\u201d <\/p>\n
