{"id":140768,"date":"2025-11-15T06:37:05","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T06:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/140768\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T06:37:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T06:37:05","slug":"giant-shoebill-that-greeted-tourists-in-africa-has-razor-sharp-beak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/140768\/","title":{"rendered":"Giant shoebill that greeted tourists in Africa has razor-sharp beak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week we shared footage of an enormous, prehistoric-looking bird that had <a href=\"https:\/\/ftw.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/outdoors\/2025\/11\/10\/birders-in-awe-massive-shoebill-lands-on-tour-boat-uganda\/87196625007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landed on a tour boat<\/a> in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>The striking shoebill seemed to dwarf the tourists and guide, largely because of the way it was photographed.<\/p>\n<p>The tourists remained still and probably were not in danger, however. That&#8217;s because shoebills, while they boast razor-sharp beaks that can decapitate fish and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanparks.org\/shoebill-conservation-bangweulu-unique-solution-unique-bird?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=18820285803&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADRCFtAN9YUWh5DVOMYkUD9M3IeVj&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAw9vIBhBBEiwAraSATs7_bq1L3o5vvQcGQi2WgTGZ_0RCj0aW3wy4wM6MnqPJKeVgDXdYpxoC9ZcQAvD_BwE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">even baby crocodiles<\/a>, are not aggressive toward humans.<\/p>\n<p>But humans represent a significant threat to one of Africa\u2019s most distinctive avian species, whose overall population is only between 5,000 and 8,000 birds. Threats include habitat loss, illegal pet trade, and general disturbance \u2013 but also fishing where shoebills are protected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ftw.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/outdoors\/2025\/11\/06\/grizzly-bear-reveals-giant-claws-charging-ferociously-trail-camera-yukon\/87131171007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ALSO: Massive Yukon grizzly bear provides gripping trail-cam moment<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That became apparent this week when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mabambatrips\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mabamba Trips Uganda<\/a>, which captured the footage of the shoebill on the tour boat, shared the accompanying Instagram post.<\/p>\n<p>The image shows a shoebill entangled by fishing line in a nearby wetlands where, like <a href=\"https:\/\/mabambaswamps.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mabamba Bay<\/a>, the species is protected.<\/p>\n<p>Mabamba Trips stated: \u201cDuring its hunting attempt, the shoebill tried to catch a fish, which was already hooked, and in the process, the hook became lodged in its bill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The shoebill was rescued and is being cared for at a zoo. Muhumuza Innocent Braddoco, who guides for Mabamba Trips, updated followers via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mabamba.trips.ug\/posts\/pfbid0pwVwNEnXyxLEp9aVEg3vSHdk424TawkQVPKH9dgcuhAMYEtWXJtUEWQQwNa9YZb7l\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors have informed me that the shoebill will remain under treatment for 14 days. It sustained an injury solely to its beak from a hook.
