Credit Dr. Bi Zhao<\/p>\n<p>Reliable dating method <\/p>\n<p>Dating dinosaur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/dinosaurs\/dinosaur-eggs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">eggs<\/a> has typically been a challenge due to dependency on indirect methods, such as dating surrounding volcanic rocks.<\/p>\n<p>This approach is unreliable because the proxy materials, like volcanic rock, might have been changed by geological processes or created long after the eggs were laid, resulting in incorrect age estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the new technique called carbonate uranium-lead (U-Pb) dating offers a more direct and reliable solution.<\/p>\n<p>It works by firing a micro-laser at an eggshell fragment to measure the ratio of uranium to lead atoms within the carbonate minerals of the shell itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe fired a micro-laser at eggshell samples, vaporizing carbonate minerals into aerosol. This is analyzed by a mass spectrometer to count uranium and lead atoms. Since uranium decays into lead at a fixed rate, we were able to calculate the age by measuring accumulated lead\u2014 it\u2019s like an atomic clock for fossils,\u201d Zhao explained.<\/p>\n<p>The team tested this technique on dinosaur eggs found at the Qinglongshan site in the Yunyang Basin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The site is said to be China\u2019s first national dinosaur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202401\/03\/WS6594bda1a3105f21a507a476.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">egg fossil reserve<\/a>, holding as many as 3,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/culture\/cannonball-sized-dinosaur-eggs-crystals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">fossilized eggs<\/a> across three locations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The majority of these fossils are believed to belong to the species Placoolithus tumiaolingensis, a type of dinosaur known for having highly porous eggshells.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The specific egg sample used for dating came from a cluster of 28 eggs found within breccia-bearing siltstone.<\/p>\n<p>Cretaceous period climate change<\/p>\n<p>The new dating method revealed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/dinosaur-eggs-with-bird-like-features\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">dinosaur eggs<\/a> are approximately 85 million years old, with a margin of error of 1.7 million years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt revolutionizes our ability to establish global dinosaur egg chronologies,\u201d Zhao said.<\/p>\n<p>The Cretaceous period was a time of major global change, marked by intense volcanic activity and mass extinctions. <\/p>\n<p>Fossils from this era provide scientists with valuable clues about the past climate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/culture\/80-million-year-old-worlds-smallest-dinosaur-egg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">dinosaur<\/a> eggs were laid during the Turonian epoch of the Late Cretaceous, millions of years after a period of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms5194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">global cooling<\/a> had already begun. <\/p>\n<p>This shift to a cooler climate likely contributed to a decline in dinosaur diversity and may have affected the egg-laying habits of species at the Qinglongshan site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDendroolithids\u2019 [species group] specialized pore structures may represent evolutionary adaptations to this climatic shift, as novel egg types emerged worldwide during cooling,\u201d Zhao <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/news\/2025\/09\/11\/85-million-year-old-dino-eggs-understanding-cretaceous-climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">said.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cP. tumiaolingensis may represent an evolutionary dead end where the egg-laying dinosaur population failed to adapt successfully to cooling climates,\u201d Zhao explained.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are already planning to expand their sampling, looking at eggs from different rock layers to build an even more detailed regional timeline.<\/p>\n<p>The team highlights that this dating method is important for understanding dinosaur evolution, extinction events, and environmental changes during the Late Cretaceous period.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were reported in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/earth-science\/articles\/10.3389\/feart.2025.1638838\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Frontiers
