Sunday is here and with it another Wordle for us to solve. I always talk about how it\u2019s \u201cLazy Sunday\u201d but then refuse to put my money where my mouth is and just crack away at a million things. I doubt today will be any different. Sunday is also Game Night for my group of nerd friends. I\u2019ve been the DM of a months-long D&D campaign with a party of six, so it\u2019s quite the trick getting everyone together. I\u2019ve also started running a Wednesday-night Dragonbane campaign, because no matter how much I complain about being busy, you can always find more time for games. Speaking of which, let\u2019s take a crack at this game and solve today\u2019s Wordle!<\/p>\n

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game where your goal is to guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries or fewer. After each guess, the game gives feedback to help you get closer to the answer:<\/p>\n

Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct spot.Yellow: The letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot.Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.<\/p>\n

Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Every day brings a new word, and everyone around the world is trying to solve the same puzzle. Some Wordlers also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot or even against me, your humble narrator. See rules for Competitive Wordle toward the end of this post.<\/p>\n

STARE was unlucky today, leaving me with 249 words remaining and one yellow \u201cE.\u201d I tried to make lemonade with LEMON but it only cut that down to 27, though I got a yellow \u201cL\u201d in the bargain. YIELD yielded results, at least, lining up four green boxes and giving me just two words to choose from: FIELD and WIELD. Alas, I chose poorly and got this in 5.<\/p>\n

Wield comes from Old English wealdan, meaning \u201cto govern, control, or rule.\u201d This in turn comes from Proto-Germanic *waldan\u0105, \u201cto command or have power over,\u201d which is also related to words like waltzen (German, \u201cto roll\/turn\u201d) and wield\u2019s semantic cousin rule through the general idea of exerting control.<\/p>\n

So the core sense has always been about holding power or control, whether over a weapon, tool, or authority.<\/p>\n
