How does a person summarise the 45-year career of Tom Cruise<\/a> in a four-minute speech? \u201cMission impossible,\u201d said director Alejandro I\u00f1\u00e1rritu on Sunday as Hollywood celebrated the movie star with an honorary Oscar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, who directed Cruise in an untitled film set for release next October, introduced the Top Gun<\/a> star and said his talent extended beyond the dangerous stunts he has become famous for.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not how far he runs or how high he jumps,\u201d I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said. \u201cIt\u2019s how precisely he decides to move, those tiny calibrations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Honorary Oscar statuettes were handed out to Cruise and three others selected by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n

The 63-year-old Cruise, a four-time Oscar nominee who has never won the award, was previously nominated twice for best actor in Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, once for supporting actor in Magnolia and once for best picture with Top Gun: Maverick.<\/p>\n

He was was chosen for the honourary award for work in films from Risky Business to two Top Gun movies and the Mission: Impossible<\/a> franchise. He also has become a prominent champion for the movie business as it faces competition from streaming and social media.<\/p>\n

Accepting his award, Cruise talked about how seeing movies in a theatre impressed him as a child. \u201cSuddenly the world was so much larger than the one that I knew,\u201d he told a crowd of luminaries that included Steven Spielberg<\/a>, Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a> and Ariana Grande<\/a>. He said he worked every job he could to earn money for movie tickets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will always do everything I can to support this art form and to champion new voices, to protect what makes cinema powerful, hopefully without too many more broken bones,\u201d he said to laughter. Cruise broke his ankle while filming a stunt in 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking films is not what I do. It\u2019s who I am,\u201d Cruse added.<\/p>\n

The gala also honoured Dolly Parton<\/a> with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her charitable efforts, including founding a library that has provided more than 300 million books to children. She accepted her award via video.<\/p>\n
