Ireland has been one of the EU\u2019s fiercest critics<\/a> of Israel\u2019s huge military retaliation following the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, 2023 that killed some 1,200 people, most of them civilians. Israel shuttered<\/a> its embassy in Dublin last December in protest against Ireland\u2019s decision to recognize Palestinian statehood, as accusations of genocide in Gaza intensified.<\/p>\n

At a general assembly of the EBU in July, a number of members raised concerns about Israel\u2019s participation in the 2026 competition, which is due to take place in Vienna in May.<\/p>\n

Slovenia and Spain have also threatened<\/a> to pull out of the competition if Israel participates. <\/p>\n

In a statement in July, the EBU said it would hold a \u201cstructured and in-depth\u201d dialogue with member broadcasters on how to \u201cmanage participation, geopolitical tensions, and how other organizations have approached similar challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EBU said it would \u201creport back with recommendations this autumn.\u201d<\/p>\n

A decision on Ireland\u2019s participation in the contest will be finalized once the EBU makes its decision about Israel\u2019s participation, RT\u00c9 said.<\/p>\n
