Garda\u00ed in Cork city<\/a> are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 38-year-old Cork man. The victim, who has been named locally as Mark O’Connell, died at Cork University Hospital after sustaining serious injuries during an altercation at a property in Hollyhill at the weekend.<\/a><\/p>\n Garda\u00ed and the National Ambulance Service responded to the scene at the Hollyville estate at around 4.30 am on Sunday morning. It’s understood that Mr O’Connell had been stabbed several times during an incident at the property<\/a>, and paramedics rushed him to the CUH <\/a>for emergency treatment.<\/p>\n Mark passed away as a result of his injuries, and a man in his 50s arrested shortly after the incident remains in Garda custody. Following a post-mortem examination carried out on Sunday evening, the man remains detained at a Garda station in the Cork division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.<\/p>\n The results of the post-mortem are not being released for operational reasons, and Garda\u00ed have not yet confirmed the launch of a formal murder investigation. A senior officer has been assigned to lead the investigation, and a liaison officer has been appointed to support Mark O’Connell’s family. Garda\u00ed continue to appeal for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.<\/p>\n A Garda spokesperson said: “Garda\u00ed in Cork continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a male aged in his 30s following an incident in Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork City, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 16th November 2025.<\/p>\n “Shortly after 4.30 am on Sunday, Garda\u00ed and emergency services attended the scene following reports of a disturbance involving two individuals at Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork City. A male aged in his 30s was conveyed to Cork University Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. A post-mortem examination has been completed, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons.<\/p>\n “A male aged in his 50s continues to be detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, at a Garda Station in the Co. Cork area.<\/p>\n “Garda\u00ed continue to appeal for witnesses to this incident to come forward. Anyone with available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork City, between 3.30 am and 4.30 am on Sunday morning, 16th November 2025, is asked to make it available to investigating Garda\u00ed.”<\/p>\n Mr O’Connell’s death has sent shockwaves through the community. Cork North Central TD Thomas Gould earlier spoke of a sense of sadness following such a shocking incident.<\/p>\n He told Cork Beo: \u201cMy thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and everyone affected by this incident. This was a tragedy, and the neighbours and nearby residents are shocked.
