An estimated 24 million people across Great Britain are claiming benefits or State Pension from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Some benefits such as Universal Credit<\/a> can be a lifeline for those in or out of work on a low income, providing crucial financial support to cope with daily living costs.<\/p>\n Disability benefits including Personal Independence Payment <\/a>(PIP) and Attendance Allowance, can help people mitigate the extra costs of living with a long-term illness or health condition. These regular payment can help pay for taxis, additional equipment, mobility scooters, wheelchairs and even a vehicle lease through the Motability Scheme.<\/p>\n However, there are several reasons why DWP may reduce, pause or even stop someone\u2019s benefit claim – including going overseas on holiday for more than four weeks. But claimants my not be aware that payments could also be stopped if you go into hospital. Going into hospital<\/a> for even just one night and failing to inform the right benefit department may result in your payments being reduced or stopped.<\/p>\n READ MORE: DWP confirms new rules for people on PIP, DLA or Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/a>READ MORE: New PIP monthly payment rates for all eight award types from next April<\/a><\/p>\n The DWP has provided guidance on the GOV.UK website<\/a> on what claimants need to do if they are admitted to hospital and will miss a Jobcentre Plus appointment.<\/p>\n However, they also have a warning which states: \u201cYour claim might be stopped or reduced if you do not report a hospital stay.\u201d<\/p>\n Below is everything you need to know about going into hospital if you are claiming benefits.<\/p>\n DWP guidance states you must tell the office that pays your benefit as soon as possible if you:<\/p>\n go into hospital for one night or longergo into a care home or rehabilitation centre for one night or longerwill miss a Jobcentre Plus appointment because you\u2019re in hospital or have a medical appointment<\/p>\n However, if you are unable to contact the relevant department yourself, DWP says a friend or relative can call them for you.<\/p>\n What you need to tell DWP<\/p>\n You will need to give your:<\/p>\n full namedate of birthNational Insurance numberpartner\u2019s details – if they are on your claim<\/p>\n And if you\u2019re calling on behalf of a friend or relative, you need to give your name and contact details too.<\/p>\n What happens if I go into hospital?<\/p>\n You need to give details about your stay in hospital, including:<\/p>\n the exact date you went into hospitalthe exact date you left hospital – if you have leftthe name of the hospital you were inthe name of the ward you were on – if you know itif you moved between hospitalsany other hospital stays in the last 28 dayswhere you were discharged to, for example your home or a care homeHow to report your hospital stay<\/p>\n DWP guidance<\/a> states: \u201cWho you tell depends on which benefits you get.
