The woman accused of murdering a 61-year-old man at his home in Macroom said her co-accused \u201cdanced on him and stabbed him to death\u201d, and he claimed that she told him she hit the victim in the face.<\/p>\n
Daniel Hourigan, aged 33, who is originally from Farranree in Cork city, and 32-year-old Linda O\u2019Flynn, who is originally from the Hollyhill area of Cork city, both deny the murder of 61-year-old Michael Foley at his home in Macroom between January 31 and February 1 2024. Each defendant effectively blames the other. To the murder charge, each of them replied not guilty to murder but guilty of impeding the prosecution of another person.<\/p>\n
At the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork, Ms Justice Siobh\u00e1n Lankford and the jury heard evidence yesterday of each of the accused being interviewed by garda\u00ed.<\/p>\n
Daniel Hourigan told Detective Garda Fintan Coffey that he and Ms O\u2019Flynn came back from Macroom and went to Fitzgerald\u2019s Park \u201cto score heroin\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said at interview: \u201cShe said she came to bed two hours after me. She told me she hit Michael after being sexually touched by him. She said she hit him in the face \u2026 I called her a tramp and said we were finished.<\/p>\n
\u201cLinda had marks on her knuckles and wrists. She said she self-harmed, but I did not believe it. Linda was in shock \u2014 I believe it was put on, though. She lied about being pregnant (with my baby) and having cancer.”<\/p>\n
Mr Hourigan told garda\u00ed that he received a phone call from an unidentified person saying, \u201cI would be next if I didn\u2019t keep my mouth closed and keep Linda out of it\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ms O\u2019Flynn was interviewed in February 2024 by garda\u00ed and said: \u201cI was never in Macroom. Charge me or let me out. I don\u2019t know these people … I don\u2019t know Michael Foley \u2026 I know nothing. Prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Detective Garda Peter Nolan asked her: \u201cWhat can you tell me about Michael?\u201d<\/p>\n
She replied: \u201cFuck all.\u201d<\/p>\n
At interview in February 2024, she said that her relationship with Mr Hourigan was going on for 20 years and that he was never violent to her, but that he was a slob.<\/p>\n
On March 4, 2024, she reached out to garda\u00ed saying she wanted to meet with them again to say something more. She attended the Bridewell with her friend and solicitor Diarmuid Kelleher.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cDanny physically danced on him and stabbed him to death. Danny said we would be safe there. By the time I got to that room, there was blood everywhere and I mean everywhere. I ran back to the bedroom and locked myself in. I tried to (ring for help).<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were both drunk. Danny was stoned\u2026 I walked back up (to kitchen). Danny said: \u2018Get the fuck out of the room.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cDanny had a knife in his hand. I couldn\u2019t tell you where he got it from. He must have got it there because he had no knife (before).<\/p>\n
\u201cHe stabbed him twice, three times. I ran back down to the bedroom with fright and pissed myself. I had no phone. I would have rang for help. I ran for the door. Danny was standing in front of the door and said: \u2018Get back down to the bedroom.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cHe tore me by the head. He dragged me down. He broke my rib. He would not give me the phone to get help. He broke my mouth.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis eyes were black, like a demon, a devil. I don\u2019t know what they were arguing about. Danny was in and out of the bedroom, he wouldn\u2019t leave me go.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think he set out to hurt anyone. At the end of the day, he is the one who murdered him \u2014 not me. I was the one who tried to get help but couldn\u2019t \u2026 I told Danny to go and check the man. He said he was fine \u2026 I am clearing my name because I did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Detective Garda Hugh Byrne said that, during interviews, Ms O\u2019Flynn spat at him, tried to knock his laptop, and hit a DVD recorder in the interview room.
