It has been praised as a \u201clandmark\u201d development for educational collaboration between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/\">Republic of Ireland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/northern-ireland\/\">Northern Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The announcement was made on Tuesday after formal approval of the partnership by the two institutions, with the aim that the new university college will become fully operational for the start of the 2026 academic year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Students enrolling at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/louth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/louth\/\">Co Louth<\/a> campus next September will graduate with a Queen\u2019s degree or postgraduate qualification. They will receive the same standard of education and award as those studying in Belfast, according to Queen\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dundalk-institute-of-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dundalk-institute-of-technology\/\">Dundalk IT<\/a> institution will continue to play a \u201cvital role\u201d as part of the technological sector in the Republic and deliver \u201cessential educational provisions such as apprenticeships\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The development comes two years after concerns were raised about the financial sustainability of the institute when it emerged it was running at a \u20ac1.5 million deficit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 500 staff are employed at Dundalk IT. It has around 6,450 full-time and part-time students enrolled across four schools in business and humanities, health and science, engineering, and informatics and creative arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is one of only two third-level institutes in the country that is not part of a technological university, D\u00fan Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology being the other. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Announcing the partnership, Queen\u2019s said it will \u201ccatalyse economic and social development within the Dublin-Belfast corridor\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Work to establish a joint research and innovation \u201chub\u201d is among its plans, with proposed projects in health and life sciences as well as energy and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">High-quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the  northeast will also be expanded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Diarmuid O\u2019Callaghan, president of the institute, said the collaboration could be of significant benefit for the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe combined strengths of this relationship will enhance educational opportunities, and research and innovation, in our communities from Dundalk to Belfast and far beyond,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Queen\u2019s president and vice-chancellor, Prof Ian Greer, described the development as \u201chugely significant and exciting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A formal agreement will be signed next month in what is the first all-island arrangement of its kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">James Lawless, Minister for Further and Higher Education, welcomed the announcement as a \u201clandmark initiative with the potential to strengthen and advance higher education across the island\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Stormont Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald said it marked a major step in collaboration between both jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cStrengthening academic links across the island will expand opportunities for student and researcher mobility, foster innovation and further support delivery of regional balance,\u201d she added. \u201cBy investing in shared knowledge and talent, both institutions are shaping a future where excellence thrives through co-operation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dundalk Institute of Technology (IT) is to become a university college following agreement of a merger with Queen\u2019s&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":147867,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[84127,61,60,9820,43],"class_list":{"0":"post-147866","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ireland","8":"tag-alan-betson","9":"tag-ie","10":"tag-ireland","11":"tag-mam","12":"tag-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/147866","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=147866"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/147866\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/147867"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=147866"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=147866"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=147866"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
