Former minister for finance Paschal Donohoe<\/a> has admitted he considered not running in the 2024 general election<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mr Donohoe resigned from the Cabinet on Tuesday to take up a post with the\u00a0World Bank<\/a>. He will quit as a TD this week.<\/p>\n

He has been replaced in his ministerial role by the T\u00e1naiste and\u00a0Fine Gael<\/a>\u00a0leader\u00a0Simon Harris<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mr Donohoe told RT\u00c9 radio\u2019s Today with David McCullagh that he \u201calways had an understanding\u201d with Mr Harris that the occasion could arise that he would leave the Government<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Fine Gael<\/a> TD for Dublin Central<\/a> said when he was presenting Budget 2026<\/a> in October this year, he was aware \u201cthis could be the last time\u201d. <\/p>\n

Mr Donohoe said he \u201cmade some big decisions\u201d before the last general election and had considered not running, but then decided to do so.<\/p>\n

He had been determined to \u201cgive all my focus\u201d as minister for finance to the budget and the Finance Bill.<\/p>\n

His departure had \u201ctaken shape over the last number of days\u201d, but he said he wanted to complete the Finance Bill first. Mr Donohoe said he had applied for the role with the World Bank and gone through the process over a number of weeks.<\/p>\n
