The Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt’s sold at Sotheby’s auction house in New York for $236.4m(\u00a3179m), becoming the second most expensive work of art ever sold art auction. The auctioneer hammered the sale at $205 million (\u00a3156m), but with buyer’s premiums and fees the final price increased more than $31 million (\u00a323.6m). <\/p>\n
The painting attracted bids from at least six collectors before it sold. The portrait is one of a few of Klimt’s works to survive World War II intact. It depicts Elisabeth Lederer, an heiress and the daughter of one of Klimt’s patrons, wearing a white robe and standing in front of a blue tapestry covered in Asian motifs.
