\n\tEmma Thompson<\/a> is such a big fan of Oscar-hopeful short Jane Austen\u2019s Period Drama, she\u2019s boarded the film as \u201cexecutive menstrual advisor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJulia Aks and Steve Pinder\u2019s live-action comedy follows Austen-esque heroine Miss Estrogenia (Aks) as she gets her period during a long-awaited marriage proposal. This leads to a series of comic misunderstandings with her would-be fianc\u00e9, Mr. Dickley, as the short inventively satirizes the struggles of both men and women in destigmatizing menstruation.<\/p>\n

\n\tTwo-time Academy Award winner and beloved British actress Thompson \u2014\u00a0an outspoken advocate for women\u2019s rights and bodily autonomy \u2014\u00a0called Jane Austen\u2019s Period Drama \u201ca bloody little gem.\u201d She said: \u201cI\u2019ve sent it to everybody, and everybody just goes completely berserk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSteve and Julia asked me to EP ahead of their Oscar campaign,\u201d she explained. \u201cBut I tend not to take a producer credit unless I\u2019ve actually done some work. But I think a comic title, such as Executive Menstrual Advisor, is something I\u2019m very happy with.\u201d She jokes: \u201cI realize I\u2019m not going to be remunerated in any way. I\u2019ve had a discussion with my agents about it \u2014 they can be very violent under certain circumstances \u2014 but no, they\u2019re fine. And I love that title.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve never seen anybody deal with it in this way,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s such a wonderfully, bravely, revolutionarily funny thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAks said Thompson\u2019s enthusiasm for the film \u201cmeans the world \u2026 She\u2019s a Jane Austen icon and a Dame, for God\u2019s sake,\u201d referencing the star\u2019s Oscar-winning Sense and Sensibility (1995). Pinder added: \u201cHer support adds legitimacy not only to the fight against period shame but to comedies as serious awards<\/a> fare.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film\u2019s Oscar campaign comes on the heels of a notable film festival run. It premiered at the Santa Barbara International<\/a> Film Festival and went on to screen at the Tribeca Festival, with both festivals adding screenings due to popular demand.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 13-minute film has garnered over 28 awards to date, including the Oscar-qualifying jury award for comedy at Aspen Shortsfest and the highest-rated audience award in the history of the Cleveland International Film Festival. The directors garnered more attention at festivals for publicly providing free period products, cheekily branded \u201ccomplimentary cotton stoppers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJane Austen\u2019s Period Drama is produced by Elli Legerski and stars Aks (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Ta\u2019imua (Doctor Odyssey) and Samantha Smart (Bull).<\/p>\n

\n\tThompson\u2019s recent projects include action-thriller Dead of Winter and Apple TV\u2019s Down Cemetery Road. Her advocacy spans to chairing the Helen Bamber Foundation, supporting Greenpeace and Elect Her and serving as a patron of the Food Foundation.<\/p>\n
