\n The Department has responded to growing concerns from taxi drivers over Uber\u2019s recently introduced fixed fare system.\n <\/p>\n

Drivers warn the move could threaten their livelihoods and undermine safety and regulatory standards in the sector.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, taxi drivers in Cork who oppose the company\u2019s fixed fare rates delivered a letter to Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin\u2019s office in Turner’s Cross.<\/p>\n

A protest is also planned outside the D\u00e1il this Saturday.<\/p>\n

Minister of State Se\u00e1n Canney told the D\u00e1il that the National Transport Authority oversees taxi pricing and that Uber\u2019s fixed price option does not breach current regulations.<\/p>\n

“It’s something that we can go back and look at from the point of view of within the department and talk to the NTA about it. But it is. but I also we have to make sure that whatever is being done at the moment I don’t think it’s breaching regulations. It may be be closing but it’s actually using our whatever the pricing structures to bring down the price a bit which customers would feel isn’t a great, but long term we need to have a sustainable tax industry and I think that’s why we set increases through the regulator so that people can make a living on.”<\/p>\n
