{"id":150318,"date":"2025-11-20T15:13:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T15:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/150318\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T15:13:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T15:13:07","slug":"pi-the-whale-returns-to-isles-of-scilly-during-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/150318\/","title":{"rendered":"Pi the whale returns to Isles of Scilly during migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A humpback whale that has become a regular visitor to the Isles of Scilly has returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust said had been visiting the islands in winter over several years, including in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Olivia Willmore, fundraising and communications manager at Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, said the appearances had been &#8220;absolutely wonderful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She said the islands, 28 miles (45km) off the Cornish coast, were on the migration route. &#8220;We are so privileged to have them pass by us every single year,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ms Willmore said the trust knew the whale was Pi because of the markings on its dorsal fin but the gender of the whale was unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She said: &#8220;Those markings are incredibly unique from whale to whale so they are almost like a human fingerprint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Scilly is an enormous draw for wildlife watchers anyway, you know, our seabirds are, we have some extraordinary unique colonies that land on the islands, but I think certainly some people are starting to come with the hope of whale spotting.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A humpback whale that has become a regular visitor to the Isles of Scilly has returned.
